That's a great idea considering it's currently a windswept, empty space. Even taking into account event use, there must be scope to have some features in the square. I'd hope the council would get behind any good designs that come out of this.

I've always wanted a statement fountain, can always be fenced in for rugby days etc. and it definitely needs more seating.

What i thnk is clear is that if you're going to build something this tall, this is a good place to do it and the design is, for now, pretty high quality.

Surely planning can only be refused via a valid point of order, otherwise it'll just be granted on appeal. "I don't like the look of it" isn't enough.

Oh sure, I was just making the point that the committee meeting could be quite a divided one. Councillors can and do sometimes ignore officer's advice and have, on occasion, been vindicated by the courts.

Recent cases involving housing developments in Wrexham are a case in point where elected members pointed out that there was little purpose in having a planning committee at all, if it existed only to rubber-stamp officers reccomendations.

The 50 storey building in Central Square has been approved.

It's a nice enough design but I'm not sure about the Flatiron Building comparisons.

I’m glad it’s been given the green light.

I’m sceptical however on if it ever goes ahead, given the history of 100+ metre buildings in Cardiff.

Anyone got a clue why BBC refer to its “max height”? They also state IF it’s built to this level.

Is there a clause in its application or something? Would it not need a reapplication if its height changed?

I’ve seen far too many of these 100m+ towers getting mothballed. I can only assume this one is too?

I wouldn't write off this project yet! The building was only approved early this year. Planning for enabling and access work for this size project would take at least the rest of this year and probably into next year I would've thought. Construction wouldn't start until mid/late 2027 if all goes to plan.

Yes totally agree! this one is a monster so we have to expect that it'll take time, but I feel optimistic that we will get something pretty tall at this site, as ever we've got to be patient!!
