Wine buffs and wine wannabes get ready - a new wine shop could be opening in Cardiff’s city centre.

Roving Sommelier Worldwide Limited want to move into an empty property on Barrack Lane.

It will have a small retail space selling wine and spirits and a small delicatessen as well as small area to eat in. There will be occasional wine tasting evenings. The application is for it to be open from 10am to 10pm, but rarely past 7pm during winter.

An application has been made for a change of use at an empty premises on Barrack Lane in Cardiff city centre from shops/financial to restaurant/cafe.

The premises on Barrack Lane were built with the hope they would be taken up by new or young businesses. But many remained empty and the council allowed a change in use for the premises to boost interest.

'Great addition'
The Grazing Shed at the end of Barrack Lane were originally an “incubator” retail unit and other premises on the lane include Magic Wrap, Bramina and Gravity Station.

The unit this new venture would open it has been empty with no takers for “several years”.

The application reads: “There has been limited interest in occupying this remaining vacant unit under its permitted A1/A2 use but there is now genuine interest from an expanding and innovative business in occupying the unit which would be a great addition to Barrack Lane and would add to the vitality and vibrancy of this part of the city centre.”

It adds that allowing a change of use would bring economic benefits and jobs as well as “increased attractiveness” to the area.

An application has been submitted to Cardiff council, which can be viewed online.

Not the first location you would expect something like that although you have the cathedral next door who could be a good customer.

Would seem to be a nice complement to Gravity Station. The location is a bit off the beaten track, but if it gets a good reputation - I think its tasting evenings, and ability to try or sample things would be important here - then it could do well. Cardiffians are going a bit more off the beaten track for bars and food now (although still all bloody shopping in Primark!)

I wonder how much of a boost Barrack Lane is seeing now Admiral is open? It puts over 2,000 customers right on its doorstop.
