Just when you thought that we'd reached saturation point on student accommodation schemes - another 650 student rooms pop up!

A pity they can't incorporate the West Wing building into the design but I guess they can squeeze more rooms in by doing it like this!
Hopefully they will provide a lot of parking spaces as contrary to what developers claim a lot of students have cars!

Do the council get any sort of tax revenue from these types of developments? I believe students don't have to pay council tax or has that changed?

No they don't, but concentrating the student population into these developments is going to free up a hell of a lot of houses in Cathays, Roath etc. Hopefully families will move back into these areas and the council will see an upsurge in rates.

Interestingly, according to WOL article 14,500 new student accommodation rooms are needed in Cardiff before the days of privately rented student houses in Cathays and Roath comes to an end.

Possibility of gentrification of this area of the city in the coming years?

Bit like the pay-day loan companies, market saturation then the bubble pops.

But hang on, what's that you say?, the fundamentals of Student Housing is built on sound rationale and economic forecasting, just like UK private and retail property markets.

Cathays is more likely to become a home to Cardiff's burgeoning population of Somalis, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis. There are already many people from these communities in the ward.

It needs to be remembered that Cathays is where the University actually is. Many students don't have cars and would be keen to be nearby. Perhaps we'll get back to a more balanced situation in Cathays and Roath between students, young professionals and families. I doubt the students will disappear entirely though. Dic Mortimer can go on dreaming.

Not all of Cardiff University is in Cathays Frank, and there are other university buildings dotted around the city from other institutions.

Some of the newer developments are also as close as homes in Cathays.

Besides, what's wrong with an 18 year old walking to places!

I can't make my mind up about this one. Perhaps my judgment is being coloured by my affection for the current building but I think this design is trying a bit hard. There seems to be a lot of different elements when perhaps less is more.

There is no doubt that the current building has an awful relationship with the street and this will at least remedy that. But the NEW building needs to interact properly with CRI, plus the very nice Victorian terracing immediately opposite in Moira Terrace and Howard Gardens.

Perhaps someone with better IT skills could upload the images from the DAS?
