That is the exterior of the main building whose demolition Karl was welling up over. I did say that it was rather elegant.

Splott University building on Courtenay Road in Cardiff. Splott University settlement was founded in 1901 & the building dates from 1906. In 1924 it became St Illtyds College & the above extension was built circa 1937. St Illtyds moved to LLanrumney in 1964 & the building later became a printing works.

What building is this? I've just buzzed around google street view and i couldn't find anything that looked like that. If i had known it was that building you were all talking about i wouldn't have written my hideous comment.

It wasn't a University as such - it was posh students doing good works amongst the plebs. Google is your friend.

The section of Walker Road between Splott Road and Moorland Road, was renamed in 1915/16 to Courtenay Road after the second Lord Tredegar, Courtenay Morgan. Shortly after the First World War, the Splott University Settlement building became St Illtyd's College (1923-1964), the first Grammar School for Catholic Boys in Wales. After the Second World War the school moved to new premises at Quarry Hill, Rumney.

Thinly veiled 'got a lazy lob on'

I wasn't aware of this "university" building in Splott, but by God the proposals to replace what does seem at least an impressive facade are appalling.

On a separate note, that 5 guys chain which people had asked about elsewhere on the forum is opening in the old Bella Italia Unit at the entrance to the Brewery Quarter which faces onto Caroline Street. The signs are all over the windows so it's happening.

Also, in unrelated news (and maybe Ash was referring to this development on James St and not the half built apartment block that I thought that he was referring to at the bottom of West Bute St).... early stage demolition work has started on that ugly old 'generator building' which is located on the corner of James St and Adelaide St.

Mount Stuart Primary School is also well into its building expansion project and there is also an extension (nearing completion) of the warehouse style units on Royal Stuart Lane. So a bit of a burst of activity in that area at the moment.

The extension to the warehouse units is two 4 bed homes with roof terraces, I believe.

Improvements in construction techniques means the thickness in the floors can be much thinner, although i doubt this would account for 13%. Does Altolusso have a large parking area at the base of the building boosting the overall height maybe?

Doesn't Altolusso have a big prow at the top? Surely that adds a few metres to it's height?

Also the ground floor apartments in Altolusso have very high ceilings.
