Sounds like the owner has told staff a load of baloney as that thing about High St / Church St is just non-sensical as described, and the business was in fact no longer viable (even if its still turning an accounting profit, it might not be worth keeping it going if the amount of capital tied up in stock is large. That capital could be better put to use in other ways to make more money).
