Shminky - we know the flyover that is being built is much further to the east than Queensgate Roundabout. We are saying that they should have continued the A4232 over the top of the Queensgate roundabout using a flyover - which was clearly planned given the existing ramp. Instead they have the junction at grade.

We were then debating whether this would have meant the flyover planned further east could be avoided. We concluded it could not.

They've just this afternoon started clearing the Queen's Gate roundabout of shrubbery.
Looks very barren and strange now!
They've also cleared the Ocean way roundabout on the other end.

They have finished clearing away the vegetation, looks very 'dock' like and industrial, hopefully they plant the area more nicely when finished as it looks awful at the moment!

Spotted this with a bit more information
http://gov.wales/topics/transport/roads ... k/?lang=en

Includes a PDF of the plan, which is only slightly better than the original "fag packet" one already out there. Bad news is that it comfirms that they're not extended the ski jump/flyover. Poor show.

I hadn't realised but going dual carriageway up to the A48 would be next to impossible given that the single lane bridge is pretty hefty as it is. Only solution would be compulsory purchase of a few houses and a new road.

How important is a proper full dual carriageway ring road for Cardiff?

I seem to remember reading somewhere, maybe even on this forum, that the current bridge was designed to have a second carriageway built parallel to it. Indeed, if I recall correctly, it was said that some work on the pre-casting for the second carriageway was actually carried out with the sections stored nearby. Of course, I might just be dreaming that!

East Moors Viaduct was clearly designed so that it could be duelled with a parallel viaduct. You can see the abutment on the southern side of the river as you approach the Lamby Way roundabout. There is also space reserved near the the northbound Newport Road Junction. The only possible obstruction I can see is one of the buildings in the retail park off newport road - the bathroom/kitchen showroom.

I also remember reading on here somewhere that the moulds were retained. Whether they still exist or the design is up to current standards is another question though. The thing I've never quite understood is why did they build the first section so wide - it could easily carry 3 lanes - if the intention was to dual it with a parallel carriageway?

A proper dual carriageway would need two lanes and a hard shoulder.
There is definitely space for a second flyover, and abutments as previously mentioned - whether or not it gets built is another matter...
