Southgate House is one of the best locations for a big tower if you ask me, especially once the Interchange is up. It's officially the biggest eyesore in Cardiff for me since St. David's House has started to be demolished.

Yes Southgate house could be replaced with a new tall, but the building isn’t terrible, if they cleaned it and changed the windows.

I vaguely remember that the owners applied for planning permission to put some extra floors on part of Southgate House years ago. I think it got refused as it would have 'overwhelmed' the Royal Hotel.

As I walked past today I took a good look at Southgate House and I think it has potential. The concrete has a pronounced yellow tint and from a distance could be taken for stone - but it does need a thorough cleaning. It is the glazing which most requires attention, in particular the opaque panels beneath each window which are that distinctive shade of 1970s brown. Replace those with something more attractive and you would have quite a smart building.

I don't see much wrong with Southgate House. I've been inside as well, and it feels quite modern.
It's actually fairly tall by Cardiff standards, and I think it fits the area quite well.

So what cranes do we have up in town currently Paul? I'd guess not alot, with one or two coming soon...such as the Premier Inn on Custom House Street and the Student Union building

It's nice to see St. David's coming down but that Media Wales building is a pig isn't it? It's really going to stand out now, at least it was hidden before.

I'm home in under 2 weeks so I'll pop into town for a wander

I don’t mind the media Wales building, I prefer it when compared to Vue cinema next door, stadium house and Southgate house. Come to think of it stadium house needs updating or removing.
