Welsh Government and Assembly apologists

PostFri Jan 16, 2015 10:46 am

can you please explain why the Assembly Members are debating this nonsense.

Of course it is against EU law and it begs the question why is it even getting time in the debate. What is worse is that 21 AMs actually voted for this with only one against, the rest abstaining. The 53 who voted for or abstained should be named and shamed. they clearly aren't fit for purpose if they are debating matters that would be illegal.

If this is the level of debate then it is clear (to me at least) that the devolution experiment has failed and that the Assembly and Welsh Government should be scrapped.

Its a non-binding "debating" motion, so need to actually vote it down. Those abstaining were taking what was clearly the most sensible option, politically. They didn't vote for it, because it would be illegal, and would be especially onerous for small businesses (even if it weren't illegal). It was also ill-drafted. But if they had actually voted against it, it could have been used as a stick to beat them with - by political opponents, or by the "equality/womens" lobby. Given it wasn't binding, why give them that stick? (If it had been a binding vote, I'm sure they would have voted no!).

But it raises a broader issue. Too many things around equality as related to gender, and issues around sex offences are becoming taboo to talk about - you get shouted down as "anti women" or "supporting sex offenders" if you question whether things are more complicated than the black and white campaigning positions. For instance, if you discuss the issues around employment or wage differentials between men and women, you are an apoligist for discrimination if you don't immediately accept the raw wage gap as "discrimination" (incidentally claims that this gap is for the "same job" are just plain wrong). Or the vilification of the (incidentally female) judge who found there were mitigating circumstances in a recent case about a teacher who had sex with a 16+ pupil (who nevertheless has been banned from teaching, is on the sex register indefinitely, and has a significant suspended custodial sentence). Making these issues black and white (its all discrimination; there can be no nuances in sex cases), closes down debate and leads to poor policy and decision making - life is shades of grey! (not sure if its 50 though!).

The question is, what has the topic really got to with this forum?

@dai
I'm aware it's non binding, but why was it being discussed in the first place?

@red dragon
Cardiff is the capital city of wales. The senedd is in Cardiff. The simpletons who allegedly act in our best interests are deciding what could affect our daily lives. I'd say anything that affects the people of cardiff can be discussed on this forum.
