The demise of Howell's has to be the worst kept secret. It's been moribund for two years at least. They even published the plans for the redevelopment.

Still a great shame though. I don't share the enthusiasm for the new development there at all.

First phase of Howell's redevelopment approved. Guess they'll be bringing on phase 2 now HoF have closed down.

Cardiff Council proposals to refurbish Cardiff Market. Really like the seating area idea, the market would make a great food destination as long as the opening hours are extended into the evenings.

Basically the street food vendor scenario as per Newport Market.

Hoardings around what was going to be the new Flannels store in Queen Street have now been changed to reflect a mixed use unit incorporating a number of Fraser Group stores - USC, Game, Sports Direct etc - does anyone know if this means plans for the new Flannels have been shelved?

The new development I must admit is more in keeping with the area - perhaps Flannels may want to go the Hayes end of the city instead? Thoughts?

There could be another large empty unit in the Grand Arcade if Sports Direct were to relocate to Queen Street. That end is looking pretty empty already.

Just spotted this... The bit about 'removing vacant retail space, previously a former Debinhams store as well as create a new city square' caught my eye. Would be a good spot to open things out a bit.

Quite a big and expensive project to demolish Debenhams, but I guess that there are limited ways to re-purpose a 3 floor department store within a shopping centre.

Looking forward to seeing the plans.

Even if they do demolish the Debenhams there’s still the ramp that runs parallel to Barrack Lane in between the Cathedral that would presumably still be need for deliveries to shops in St David’s that would stick out like a sore thumb.

Looking at the satellite map, I assume the public square will be in the middle of the former Debenhams site with the surrounding parts used as the leisure and hospitality units. The delivery ramps and areas are around the edges so will be left intact.
