Maybe it's finally going to be demolished for that new development, but not sure why they wouldn't just knock it down if so. At least something is actually happening unlike The Capitol!

Will have a look tomorrow if I can get a train from London, was a massive fail today.

Dug this out from February, it mentions turning the ground floor into housing amongst other things. Assumedly that rules out the redevelopment plans from 2021.

I read it as they were clearing the ground floor in preparation for the already announced mixed use redevelopment. The 2021 plans were for retail and A3 uses at the street and lower levels with hotel and housing above. I cant see any way you could convert the existing lower ground level, with very little natural light and a working shopping mall above, into housing.

I assume they are stripping it back to its shell so they can close it off and minimise any maintenance costs.

That would make far more sense, it may be Wales Online's writing that is the issue.

Upscale activewear brand Sweaty Betty have submitted a storefront planning application to open in the current Joules unit on The Hayes. Closing down signage has already appeared in the windows of Joules.

Which is a name no real Cardiffian has ever used for Caroline Street. It's just a student thing that's become an obsession for the journalists (?) at Wales Online!

Me too. In fact never heard anyone refer to it as Caroline St or (god forbid) Chippey Alley. Maybe it's a generational thing, but it'll always be Chippy Lane to me and I've been in and around Cardiff for over 30 years.

If it's an obsession for WalesOnline that'll only be because the subject already gets a lot of traction online and on social media.

Also lived in Cardiff for over thirty years and I, a long with everyone I know, refer to it as Chippy Lane or Caroline Street fairly interchangeably with a slight lean toward Chippy Lane.

In my mind Chippy Lane is a late night thing, say 22:00-0600, and it's Caroline Street the rest of the time.
