I'm not sure but there was a large Burton's menswear store somewhere around there at one time.

The large Dixons was the first occupant of that redevelopment, but I have a feeling it was Burtons before it was demolished (with the exterior retained).

There's a photo posted on Cardiff Now and Then on Facebook and it shows the Top Shop unit prior to redevelopment. It was split between Clinton Cards and H.Samuel with Dixons in it's old unit which is now half Clintons.

Dixons Xl took over the old C&A building for a few years. After they closed it was redeveloped and was taken by Primark before becoming Matalan.

Thank you for confirming that, with evidence. I thought that was the case.
What it does show is how much things change, and how easily we forget!

Dixons certainly moved around quite a bit then!

Here's a pic of it in the Topman unit, presumably after it left the former C&A unit (and prior to that it was in Queens West?)

Walking past Howells around 7pm, it looks like it has closed down, all the windows are blacked out (at least on St Mary Street/Wharton Street). Have I missed something?

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wale ... p-16490267 ... I think it’s safe but a reboot on the cards.

The application is 19/01837/MJR

http://cynllunio.caerdydd.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=_CARDIFF_DCAPR_128030&activeTab=summary

Basically the application is limited to removing post 1970 alterations to create an open air courtyard in front of Bethany chapel with access from both Wharton street and Saint Mary street and clearing out a lot of crud from the parts of the site that HoF have vacated. It early days but this is very promising.

The heritage impact statement is a fascinating read.
