Cardiff Tidal Lagoon

PostMon Mar 02, 2015 10:58 am

I think this deserves it's own thread.

It's going to be years yet, if in fact it happens at all, but nice to see it at least considered for the area.

File under 'I'll believe it when it happens'. Plans to harness the tidal power of the Severn are as old as the hills and have never (so far) come to anything.

Here's the 1849 version.

It will cost £6 billion but could potentially power every home in Wales, hmm.

Interesting story in the Telegraph. Suggests agreement between the company and national grid. I don't really know how these work but it seems optimistic of government approval. They also claim the costs are far better that Hinkley Point (don't get me started on that one) the problem perhaps is oddly enough the duration of the project. It would have a lifetime of 120 years meaning government would have to be thinking very long term to see the economy of it and put in the up front investment.

Is this not just an agreement to connect into the National Grid?
Nothing mentioned about strike price nor who pays the £8Bn

As an aside connections into the 275kV grid are very easy with plenty of spare capacity.
South Wales steel plants mostly gone, but Grid connections still there.
Aberthaw coming to the end of its life as well.

It seems promising but have the efficiency gains in solar and wind been greater? There's little talk about offshore wind in Wales.
