Also the judicial review has been rejected so the first stages can now start.

Common sense prevails, but how long realistically until we'll see any construction?

God knows, all the various landowners/stakeholders throughout the route have to be negotiated with yet, with Associated British Ports possibly being one of the biggest headaches.

Work of some sort is going to start immediately, but it's a long old road ahead to get this finished as we can all imagine, but at least it's now at this point. Great news for the whole of South Wales.

Edit : And here we go already

I don't blame them one bit, this is where getting the route right and the impact of the design at different points is going to take loads of work to resolve. It's difficult, but major schemes like this always are. At least it's up and running.

I wish 'Friends of the Earth' would quit harping on about climate change as a reason not to have a new M4. If we all changed to electric/hydrogen cars tomorrow, we'd still have to tackle congestion, unless you remove peoples right to have their own personal transport.

Oh and it is not a 'relief' road that is being built, it's the road they should have built in the first place!!

So Wales will wipe out its borrowing ability to pay for England's maladministration in Wales?

Remember Zach, it is WG not WAG. Not a self-hating Welshman, are you? Blowing all of our country's borrowed cash on one road is controversial. How about spending some serious dosh on improving links from the south to the north?

But I guess that you, like many people, would prefer Cardiff to be even more closely linked to London than to the rest of the nation of which our city is the capital.

Why would we want a north south road when our economy flows East West?

Even if it did make sense to do so, where would you build it? The obvious choice would be the a470 but having driven that many times I'd say that's a non starter.

We're having to clean up their mess. The m4 in Wales is a joke of a motorway. Mostly dual carriageway and poorly designed. Look at the problems around Newport, Port Talbot and Swansea. We can't afford to be bearing the entire cost of this project.

Zach, who said it was in the wrong direction? As has been stated previously, it is in the wrong location. It was built by the UK Government and it is their mistake. The UK treasury should hekp to rectify the problem. They've shirked their responsibility and passed the buck onto the Welsh Government. How are we going to pay back that £1bn+? It can't be a toll road, our tax base is weak and getting weaker and we have an aging population. This will burden generations of Welsh people. The money would be far better spent on improving public transport links between the cities and their hinterlands so that people wouldn't have to use the m4 as often.

It's a poison chalice plain and simple.
