Yes. In Wales sprinklers have been required by law in all new build and converted residential properties since January 2016. This includes in the words of the legislation "Rooms for residential purposes (other than in a hotel, hospital, prison or short stay leisure hostel)"

Also, is there a twitter page i can follow for updates?

The developers are @Watkin_Jones , the architects are @RioArchitects

They haven't tweeted much about it yet as far as I can see.

Do you know who is leading construction?

Watkin Jones are also a construction company, so I presume they're building it too.

Are you sure? I thought it was like England where student accommodation is not considered considered long-term. Look at this shameful testament to short-sitedness and profit over safety from 2011. Same developer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-14423380.

Thankfully that ridiculous decision was reversed following a bit of an outcry. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-14525485

What possible logical reasoning could there be for any exemptions anyway? Hotels, prisons, hospitals? You'd especially think students were more vulnerable. I understand that new legislation was in place in Wales and Scotland, but not sure whether student towers are still exempt.

Yes, I'm sure.

The rules are here.

https://www.labc.co.uk/guidance/spotlight/mandatory-fire-suppression-wales-technical-guide

The rules exempt only "short stay leisure hostels" not other forms of hostel accomodation. Although the word isn't used much these days purpose built student blocks are classed as hostels.

It's going ahead. I believe the work is to begin in April, completion date is late 2021. There is a schedule somewhere on the planning website.

Here is the link to the plans

https://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online- ... 960639.pdf

The reatain wall I believe refers to the steel bars placed along the railway wall which looks like it was completed ahead of shedual. If that’s the case it looks like piling will begin in a few weeks.
