Well you do have to wonder how they can build a high (for Cardiff) building with good quality materials unless they intend charging a fortune for rent. Are there really that many minted students in the city ?

Personally I'd prefer a mixed-use building of the same height that's a mixture of hotel and serviced apartments.

If this goes through, we could up with a genuine cluster of high-rise buildings, which is something not many cities in the UK have. Some have tall buildings dotted around but not in any sort of order, like Birmingham.

Manchester has a cluster around oxford road, all 20+ slender towers

I've found a render of a similar student accommodation proposal in Birmingham from the same developer (disclosed in the planning document).
It doesn't look too bad. Definitely not a particularly "cheap" design, although I'm more a fan of glass-based designs.
The one in Cardiff will obviously be a lot slimmer, but it does seem promising. And we definitely shouldn't end up with a Ty Pont Haearn 2!

Their proposal for Portsmouth was even more sleek, but seems to have been pulled due to planning problems.

We are badly lacking in towers above 30 floors. I know some don't like them but they are a good visual sign of progress in the developmet of a modern coty.

People will have to accept it eventually. They complain about the addition of new suburbs, but then also complain about the only alternative - high-rise buildings.

Cardiff is growing at a rather fast rate, and if people want to keep the green space that Cardiff is proud of, the only way of accommodating the people that move here is to build upwards. As long as it's a good design I don't think people will be too unhappy, given it's location in an already dense area.

Just been looking at their website, quite like this one from Liverpool, better for a larger plot than the Cardiff one but it shows they do some decent work. It's a shorter one but would fit quite well in Cardiff, quite similar to the Admiral building in a way.

After what happened to the Vulcan, I'd chain myself to the building if they try and remove the Golden Cross! Sometimes it's as if they want it to appear that Cardiff never existed before 1999.

The problem is, the Golden Cross is doing an abysmal trade, and there is no way it can be paying its way. It's certainly not the thriving gay bar which I remember from ten years ago, and it became a lot more isolated from the rest of the scene when the Kings Cross closed. Would it be better to move it and restore it rather than for it to close and fall into disrepair?

Of course, ideally it would be good for Brains to give it a spruce up as it has with its other city centre bars, but I think its listed status extends to inside the building(?) and therefore it would be difficult to make the structural changes needed.

I'm looking forward to seeing some renders for this now. I just hope the height can stay at roughly the 30 floor mark as a minimum, a tower of that height is way overdue in this city.
