Urbano you should stick around and illustrate the testicular foirtitude that we know you are capable of. If nothing else you've stimulated some debate regarding tall buildings and roused DaiB from his exile of late. Even Jantra has upped his game in terms of content which is no mean feat (sorry Jantra, couldn't resist :D )

I happen to agree with you in terms of the quality of tall buildings and the general note of caution that you sound. Have we learnt nothing from Ty Pont Haearn I ask. Where we differ is the comparison to Edinburgh, Bristol etc which is as far off the mark as comparisons to New York and Dubai. Also I can't get my head around the general proposition that there is a correlation between low rise buildings and affluence. Where I also agree with you is that we should be building a city of scale and density not isolated statement buildings that have no context.

Thank you very much Karl. Very kind of you.I did think things were getting very bogged down indeed . Talking about testicular fortitude (!) I was concerned that it was all becoming a bit of an adolescent penis- like litany .....my tower's bigger than your tower.....

It was rather the implication that there is a connection between high rise buildings and affluence which I was challenging; if these towers contained serious profitable businesses then arguably yes, but since they will just be crammed with spotty drunk plagiarising adolescents I hardly think so; for exactly the same reason, I would not have thought "exciting" would be the first word to spring to mind. Even resi doesn't fit exciting; no one has yet been stupid or dishonest enough to claim that tower in Swansea has made that city "exciting".

I personally think Cardiff is shaping up nicely with a number of areas developing their own unique feel. The relatively high-rise construction coming up around Central station is turning this previously desolate area into a modern CBD, while the Bute Park-Castle-Cathays Park area is a location that most cities can only dream about and always seems to be full of tourists. The Castle Quarter/Hayes area needs a bit of tidying up and enforcing into a conservation area (with a ban on garish storefronts - especially bookmakers and discount stores) - and once the Rapport/Motorpoint area is demolished and rebuilt I think we will have a city centre that we can be proud of, and which will be head and shoulders above most medium sized British cities.

Seriously - has anyone ever visited Sheffield, Leicester, Southampton, Hull, Middlesborough, etc ???? The tourists aren't exactly flooding in!

I know Sheffield, Hull and Middlesbrough quite well and the first two have very nice city centres. Hull has a very quaint old town and is this year’s UK City of Culture. It has very impressive Victorian architecture too. Sheffield is a much bigger city than Cardiff is and feels more grand. Parts of the city centre are stunning - the area between the City Hall and Town Hall especially so. Middlesbrough - again, some very decent Victorian architecture but overall not much of a wow factor.

All the same Cardiff - compact, flat, sunny, youthful - has a more pleasant city centre (IMHO) than any of the above cities. I don’t know about Leicester or Southampton but I’d imagine that they have their merits.

With the hoardings being put up it's surprising how big the site is compared to the original hoarded area, mind you given the size of this development I'm sure they will need every sq foot of space! Anyway it's moving in the right direction - piling soon presumably.

oh it's always about the height - how tiresome!! ;)

Of course it is! and I'm over the moon that this tower is going to be built in Cardiff - from the renders the quality looks pretty good, and I for one will thoroughly enjoy progress on this development. I noticed that carillion are packing up from railway work in John St - I'd love to see that 100m Development proposed there get underway! Yes for us high-rise lovers this city is looking up!!

Hi Cardiff Bay and Welcome!! Originally the building that was proposed for John St was to be all offices (except for ground level) However the new proposal is to split the main tower between offices and a hotel with a rooftop garden (on one of the wings not the actual tower). The original proposal had the structure at 87m and the new one 100m but the actual planning app for the new proposal has not yet been submitted.

Thanks for the warm welcome. The race to the sky is very interesting in Cardiff at the moment. I know it’s not everybody’s cup of tea but I’m really looking forward to Cardiff breaking the 30 story barrier (and 40 with hope street)

No. I'm right. You're wrong. Go there . And read this http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/busin ... rfed-18432

Oh mate give it a rest, will you? You could have contributed nicely, like Mr Blue Sky.

And no, you're wrong. Here's one of many sources: https://www.insidermedia.com/insider/so ... es-forward

Skip to paragraph nine: Speaking earlier this month, Change Real Estate director Ron Persaud said: "Having listened carefully to the aspirations of mayor Rees to implement a new policy for Bristol to 'build up', to see attractive, taller and ambitious buildings within the city, we have been working very closely with Bristol City Council to respond positively to this change."

This tower has received backing from the planning committee (which I saw in person) along with several other taller buildings. Although Bristol is a bit more cautious about high-rise buildings, BCC has finally accepted that something needs to be done to address issues in the city.

Yes, Bristol is lagging behind with construction, but your statement about the city "turning its back on tall buildings" is utter drivel. Especially considering the fact that you provided no evidence apart from an article which in essence, tells us "Bristol hasn't got as many tall buildings as other cities". Well done with that, not a difficult observation to make, seeing as I live in Bishopston.

Now, have you ever considered that Bristol has less tall buildings because the policies regarding the construction of tall buildings in Bristol have only just been regarded as dated, and new policies have only started being recommended in late 2016?

Here's another one which is proposed - awaiting a decision soon. Again, it's taller than anything in Cardiff currently. Now, I'm not comparing the two cities - I'm simply giving some context. These developments have started popping up since the council have finally come to realise that the city is running out of space rapidly. The city will never reach its 20,000 housing target if they don't increase the density of the developments in the Key Sites.

TL;DR. Bristol, in the past year, has seen a change in its height of developments, pushed by the mayor. It's not just doing it for the sake of having taller buildings, there are motives why Bristol is building up - mainly because the city is running out of space.

Now please stop throwing your toys out of your pram. I can see the point you're trying to make about Edinburgh, but your points about Bristol have inaccuracies.

So prior to 2016, bristol turned its back on tall developments but since then has had a change of heart (but nothing yet has been built under this new policy)
