I read this with interest today;

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/business/business-news/tesco-looks-mobile-expansion-plot-11012647

I tweeted them earlier to point out that their details were somewhat muddled. In actual fact Tesco are looking to buy O2's 50% of their joint venture, Tesco Mobile. A bit different to buying O2 for around £12bn.

Hilariously the story remains unchanged this evening :x

Are there any actual journalists left in Media Wales?

More worrying Wales Onlylies seems to have nicked the text off the first half of the Telegraph's copy. Then became bored and made up/paraphrased the remainder!

Tesco is planning to take advantage of the fall-out from Hutchison's £10.25 billion takeover of O2 with a big push in the UK mobile market, seeking to expand sales outside its tough groceries market and benefit from looming upheaval in the telecoms sector.

Since 2003 Tesco has held a 50% share in O2, but the supermarket giant is now looking to take the remaining share.

The supermarket, which has had a 50:50 joint venture with O2 since 2003, is aiming to buy the portion of Tesco Mobile it does not already own and secure a long-term deal with Hutchison for capacity on the merged 3 and O2 networks, according to industry sources.

It's more likely they were both using agency copy and no longer have the staff to rewrite it in their own house styles. The quality of both the Telegraph and its website have been in a steep decline over the past year - presumably because of staff cuts. Wales Online, on the other hand, had always been pants.

It appears that Media Wales staff don't even read their own newspapers any more.

A popular Cardiff arts centre is to open for the final time next week after it was told it must vacate its building – with Boots set to move in. The Abacus , in Wood Street in the city centre, announced the news on its Facebook page, with owners saying the news had come as a “complete shock”.

At the north end of the premises, Boots on Wood Street will be moving in June. It is understood the retailer is hoping to move to an as yet unknown temporary location nearby.

Only a minor point, but this is the sort of regular error which annoys me on WalesOnline:

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/amazingly-father-two-teenage-girls-11051059

Article reads:
The three were trapped in the car for a time after the accident on Greenway Road in Rumney , Cardiff .

Photo caption reads:
The car flipped over after hitting an island in Trowbridge, Cardiff

I know the two are neighbouring parts of Cardiff, but the car clearly didn't flip in Trowbridge and land in Rumney! There clearly needs to be more proof reading undertaken to ensure consistency

CARDIFF, WALES - DECEMBER 18: Revellers out in Cardiff City centre, South Wales, on Black Friday. Black Friday, also known as Mad Friday, is traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year for pubs and clubs. Picture shows revellers on St. Mary's Street. (Photo by Matthew Horwood)

Do they really need to tell their readers that Cardiff is in Wales?
They also regularly refer to the "south Wales valleys" as if there were some other valleys that they could be confused with.

So along with the advertising plastered over every spare inch of the website there's now a marketing question before you're able to find the typos and grammatical errors in WalesOnline articles!

Could it get any worse?

WalesOnline is vastly improved by the use of AdBlock on Chrome (not the journalistic content sadly, there's only so much you can polish a turd!)
