Circuit of Wales

The long awaited racing circuit in Blaenau Gwent has today had its final planning issues resolved, and construction may begin later this year.

I imagine views will be polarised on this one. Personally, I think it's a great idea and will bring jobs to an area of Wales that is quite poor. I do however think it's a missed opportunity not to build it to Formula 1 specifications, as a Welsh GP would be interesting. Obviously, there's a lot of competition with Silverstone, Donington, Brands Hatch etc., but cutting off the possibility instantly was a mistake, in my opinion. F1 would bring with it far more money than the MotoGP.

What does everyone think of this?

Whilst I would love to see a “Valleys GP” on the F1 calendar, the reality is that it would never compete with Silverstone, even if it was the best circuit on the planet. Silverstone is only holding its spot on the calendar out of nostalgia and the fact that so many F1 teams are based within about an hour’s drive from the track. The F1 management probably wouldn’t really care if the British GP was dropped altogether as there are loads of other countries queuing up to get in on the action and willing to pay far more for the privilege. The best you could hope for would be some sort of alternating schedule, but I doubt the Silverstone owners/investors would be keen on that.

I think it’s a great scheme with bags of potential. The karting side along would be fantastic and hopefully it’ll doing something about helping the next generation of Welsh racing drivers. It would also be great if it was opened up to the public, like the Nurburgring.
