Honestly from that angle it looks quite nice. I love the look of verticality in the windows rather than the simple horizontal axis.

Really wish they would get rid of the red cladding at the base, though.

I'm a bit concerned that it's going to end up looking like a re-clad 60's block, it certainly has that look so far.

It certainly looks nothing like the original image that was in the planning app.

what amazes me is that some people still think the finished product will look anything like the renders in the planning docs. Admiral is the only build that has surpassed expectations, everything else is a poor imitation of what was included in planning.

I was heavily excited for this one! Tall medium-level high rise building help up to shape Cardiff's skyline in a rather flat uninteresting part of the city centre (IMO), but what is being put up has thoroughly disappointed me. Unfortunately I fell for the trick, thinking high quality renders would equal a high quality building, but clearly that's not the case. I think it's going to look dire when finished and need recladding.

I will however, hold my breath (and hopefully my tongue) and await to see the finished article.

As far as I can see, the only change is from bronze to red cladding. The white cladding looks exactly the same as in the original renders. So I don't know why the white bits are causing so much fuss now.

More broadly, though,I suspect this building is going to look pretty dire – and illustrates, yet again, the limited vision of those who seek height for height sake. I simply cannot see the point of littering Cardiff with loads of crappy tall buildings – which is pretty well what has happened to date and, if this one is anything to go by, looks set to continue. There seems to be a naive hope that each new tall building will, this time, be the real thing. I predict, now, that Hope Street will look shitty (or at the very least, exceedingly mediocre), too. Those who become almost incontinent at the prospect of any tall building really should be addressing some of these issues – what should they be built of, what should they look like, where should they be built and so on. But beyond "great –here's another tall building" and "it doesn't look anything like the renders" there seems to be nothing.

Well I'll reserve judgement until complete, however there can be no denying that what is being constructed at the moment is significantly different to this...

Personally even though the render is significantly different I still believe that this tower will look good. Again we return to the same discussion about tall buildings, and I'm very optimistic about the contribution they will make to our skyline and indeed image ( time will tell ). As for Customhouse St tower I'm very optimistic about that one also. If tall buildings aren't your cup of tea I struggle to imagine you enthusing about any here - I don't think Cardiff is going to get a Shard anytime soon.

The white bits aren't different. It's only the bronze/red bits.

But there is a much bigger, more important issue over tall buildings out there which everyone seems intent on just ignoring. I can't begin to understand why.

I don't have a problem with tall buildings. I have a problem with crappy tall buildings.

There are absolutely no grounds for optimism whatsoever(this latest building fully illustrates the point). I can guarantee that the Hope Street/customhouse Street Tower will be equally disappointing.

It really is not enough just to say time and time again "great – a new tower" and then moan about it because it doesn't "look like the renders", and then simply say(akin to some religious belief) the next one will be better, whilst refusing to engage in any serious debate on the very obvious failings affecting most of these towers. And then telling off anyone who challenges this mad orthodoxy as if they were a naughty schoolboy.

I don't want crappy tall buildings BUT I don't believe this tower will be a crappy tall building. This will end up, to an extent being a matter of opinion. My opinion and desire for tall buildings in Cardiff will not change regardless of being told by anyone that they are all crappy! I'm not saying they are all magnificent but for Cardiff City centre to evolve to having the kind of skyline I'm hopeful for, every new building isn't going to be award winning architecture. Is every building in Manhattan absolutely top quality - no! Is it ok for me to love Manhattan or will the architecture police question my taste.
