Yeah, I tend to forget about the "Cuba" ones.

The Goat Major and Salt haven't re-opened this time round.

Apparently Brains are trying to attract new tenant's for them, along with a few others in South Wales. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/ ... e-19233924

Interesting addition, presumably downstairs in the brewery quarter

Apparently the old Chinese restaurant on Church Street, next to Old Arcade is being turned into a Cafe/Bar/Skate Shop, run by the spit and sawdust skate park operators on Newport Road.

Not sure what the original source is (presumably the CC planning portal), but the Skyscrapercity forum are reporting that the railway arches next to the John St development are dues to be redeveloped into bars, cafes, restaurants. Sounds promising.

Yes - arch development details on Cardiff Planning portal. A good local improvement and should be very popular ince John Street develooment complete.
Build it and they will come.
Get it wrong and they will fall off.

I just hope that the rehersal rooms currently located there have found a new home. They're an important part of the city's music ecology.

This is a much better outcome than Brains selling the company, they keep the brewery and the freeholds to the pubs. Definitely preferable to a buyout by a big pub company.

Still sad though. The track record of large brewing companies buying into smaller ones while promising to preserve their 'heritage' and 'regionality' isn't great.

Hancock's and a few other breweries became "Welsh Brewers" after Bass Charrington bought them and for a time we had HB, Allbright and a Welsh identity of sorts.

Whitbread's buy out of Rhumney Brewery and Creswell's gave us the (disgusting) Welsh Bitter for a time, but it's long gone.

The deal is reversable but only after twenty five years. Who know what will happen by then?

It leave us with Felinfoel as the 'last man standing' of the big Welsh brewing companies. I forget the exact details, but I seem to rember that it's bombproof as it's owned by a family trust that explictly rules out it ever being sold.

It's not what we'd want for Brains, but in these times the majority of smaller (and some larger) hospitality companies are on a precipice. It's adapt or die and this doesn't look like changing for a good few months yet.

It's the best option they could find and preserves the brewery and the pubs for the long term, if that's how it turns out in the end of course.
