That seems to be the way the market is going, you just have to hope that managers/companies have the sense to designate family areas and leave areas for the grown ups to enjoy in relative peace.

In my last pub we had a family area and no kids after 8pm which seemed to be a good balance, aside from the odd incredulous parents who were disgusted that little Jocasta and Tarquin couldn't come in a 10pm!

Back to your question though, not sure where is kid free these days but I have never seen any in the evening in The Deri.

Well I may open an adult only bar/restaurant on the ground floor of the Old Post Office on Westgate St in that case and call it 'The Refuge'.

BTW can anyone name a bar in Cardiff that serves food where children aren't allowed in? I know The Rummer is over 18's only but I'm thinking less of a pub, more a bar/restaurant. There seems to be nowhere where parents can go to have a quiet drink/evening out or where those who don't want to have kids running around can go, not since The Deri & Old Cottage succumbed to the lure of the 'Family Market'.

Speaking as the father of a 2 year old I think the problem is there is a severe lack of restaurants specifically aimed at catering to younger families - and I know people will say to me places like the Harvester etc. but these aren't doing enough.

I'm talking about restaurants with play areas for kids, breast feeding areas, children's cutlery, facilities to warm up baby food/milk for infants and more baby changing facilities than a poorly assembled table in the one disabled toilet in the building. So many restaurants are lacking in these basic necessities that parents have to go to just about any restaurant and "make do".

If more genuinely child-friendly restaurants existed the more 'adult' restaurants would be less busy (I'm not naive to think they will be entirely 'child free').

I think the mums, dads and young kids demographic is better catered for at out of town sites, of which there are plenty.

This made me laugh, just about sums up all that's bad about the UK vertical drinking establishments.

A pretty out of date map! Just on the 'red line' Churchill's, The Duke of Clarence and the Insole have all closed and Kitty Flynn's has had a name change.

I never knew the National Musuem was a pub, must call in there for a pint sometime.

I suppose I'll have to walk up to the Ty Mawr then.

Not a bar, but the closure of the only specialist off-licence in the city centre.

'Spirited Wines' the off-licence on St Mary Street looks to have closed. Posters in the window suggest it is going to become an Edwards Coach Tours office.

I can't recall in my many years in Cardiff it being anything other than an off-licence. For many years prior it was a handy Oddbins.
