Cardiff's new ice rink is tested out by professional skaters

PostThu Feb 11, 2016 7:10 pm

The ice is ready and the first skaters have tested the surface at the new Ice Arena Wales (IAW) in Cardiff Bay .

Fiona Zaldua and Dmitry Sukhanov, international skaters who are in charge of the new academy at IAW, were the first out on the main rink.

They will take charge of a new skating school at the venue, catering for everybody from beginners through to the top level.

The £16m new rink, which houses two ice pads, has been described as a world class facility and will be used for public skating and schools.

The newly-built IAW, which has not yet officially opened, will have more than 3,000 seats for the main rink.

The Cardiff Devils have been without a permanent home since the Wales National Ice Rink in Cardiff city centre closed in 2006.

The arena will host two ice hockey matches this weekend when National league amateur club Cardiff Fire play their first home fixture of the season.

They take on Basingstoke on Saturday and Bristol the following evening (both 6.30pm face-off). There is a strict capacity of 500 spectators for each game with tickets being sold online at cardiff-fire.com
Fire stand top of Division Two with a 100 per cent record, having played five fixtures away so far, scoring 27 goals and conceding seven.

Former Devils defenceman Jason Stone, whose number 10 shirt has been retired and will hang above the ice, makes his first Fire appearance of the season. Slovakian centre Robert Sedlak is another key player in the Fire team along with Phil Manny, Tim Burrows, Joe Myers, Alan Armour, Steve Newton, Josh Haslam and David Sadler.

Cardiff Devils, who are playing two challenge fixtures against Brest Albatros in France this weekend, are top of Elite League and play one more match at their current Big Blue Tent home before they move to the new arena, which is on the site next door.

Sheffield Steelers are the last visitors to the BBT on Sunday, February 21 (6pm), while Devils make their debut at IAW against Coventry Blaze the following Saturday, February 27 (7pm).

At last this new facility is almost open! the BTT consigned to just a bad memory (although in fairness it saw a fair bit of devils success and was well used by the public) I thought it might've blown away the other day, wow it could've been good for another decade! Anyway the new arena looks pretty good and whilst I'm surprised that a new arena has been built with only a 3,000 seat capacity? the fact that it's a twin pad facility is going to make a fair difference to its overall usage. I'm hoping now that it's a great success and the next phase of our slightly more sporting sports village gets a little closer! and where's that pesky 6 star hotel? and while I'm in this neck of the woods... is Bayscape officially not happening I wonder?
