When he first appeared, he was telling people he was going to have it open by August this year. His finance model depends on him getting parts of it up and running to help pay for the rest; one of his hotels in Liverpool is open for business with unfinished floors. He has a lot of different irons in the fire from the look of his website.

The Victorian Society has criticised an "almost total lack of detailed information" in the £40m proposals and urged Cardiff council to reject them.

Those backward Victorians, what have they ever done for us?

The developers are advertising hotel rooms for sale on rightmove, interesting approach to raising funds

And before a decision is made - you'd almost think they'd been guaranteed the outcome in advance.

In a perfect world perhaps the coal exchange could be restored for other uses, by a developer who is prepared to explain every miniscule detail of the work to be carried out. BUT, at the moment it is on a downward spiral and eventually would become an unstable structure where the only practical solution would be demolition! :| To a certain extent we are putting our hope and trust in signature living to respect this historic building and restore is as sympathetically as possible, but the option seems to be pretty grim. On the plus side - it's in their interests to do a first class restoration in order to get a return on their investment. Also I genuinely think that restoring the Coal Exchange will act as a catalyst for the area - that has so much potential

I am cautiously over the moon that we may soon be getting this...

to rescue this wonderful historic building from this...

I'm hoping that in years to come, part of the history of a building that already has plenty! is signature living appearing on the scene and saving it from almost certain demise. I wish them good fortune with the project and am grateful for them seeing the potential. Let's not forget that the queue to actually do the work required wasnt exactly going around the block!!

What's the best hope for the area? Flats? Are the buildings convertible to modern offices and is the demand really still there down that way if they were?

Seems like most new apartment schemes around this area sell out pretty quick. I think only the sports village struggles due to inflated prices and lack of a developed area.

Work has started today, but they haven't yet put in a full planning application.
