I know there have been an awful lot of possible start dates associated with this project, and they all come and go with not the slightest sign of anything actually happening, you could be forgiven for thinking this was going to be the case again...

but...

We were promised a fence and a fence, or part of, we now have, exciting times.

Even the hoardings have been adjusted for the budget! :( ;)

In all seriousness, this is great news. Nearly 8 years later, we have some action!

I walked past today, and there are signs up saying the path from Pont y Werin to watkiss way will be closed from tomorrow (11th July). Pedestrians and cyclists are directed west to another path near the flyover.

I guess that suggests ground works will hopefully start next week.

It's funny you should say that, as I did the same yesterday, and took this photo :geek: (sad but true!!)...

The updated plans for the tower shouldn't be too far off now. Hopefully the quality hasn't been reduced too much!

The cycle/walking path diversion looks ridiculous!

‘Prior to the commencement of development details of an upgraded temporary
pedestrian link between the application site and the front of the Toys’R’Us shop on the
opposite side of Watkiss Way shall have been submitted to and approved by the Local
Planning Authority. The approved link shall be in place before phase 2 of the
development hereby permitted is brought into beneficial use’.

Judging by previous experience the 2nd phase will start in 2020 and the diversion will still be in place

I hate this project now that is has eventually started :(

Remind me who is behind this again?

There's no other viable option for the cycle path, short of closing the bridge. Personally I think it a minor inconvenience for the regeneration project, particularly when its completed. Phase 2 can wait, the green space leading down to the pontoons looks better than a high rise development.

The diversion is in place until May 2018, and in my opinion is not a big inconvenience.
The developers will want the normal path reopened in time for the launch of the phase 1 bar and restaurant, to ensure plenty of foot fall.
The other temporary pedestrian link to toys r us, mentioned in Zach's post, will not happen due to the Porthcwlis development over the road. There is an application to remove the condition on the planning portal: 16/01563/MJR

On a visit today to the ISV and the hoarded up Bayside site I wondered if the river Ely was to play some part in 'shipping' of building materials to the construction of the development? This was something that was originally mentioned - some on here may remember that.
Anyway I'm sure that will become apparent when construction starts in earnest and It will be interesting to see if the waterway will be utilized at all. One things for sure cardiffwalesmap will be keeping a keen and regular photographic eye on construction!, and really looking forward to doing so.
The ISV is starting to fill up! if demand is good for Bayside surely this will have a very positive effect on future plans for the peninsular - which really could end up being very special! Maybe we'll know that things for the ISV have really taken off when someone makes toys-r-us an offer the can't refuse!! Mind you they'll be getting a complex as the same thing happened in town!
