Fitzalan Court - Student Accom (256 bedrooms)

Work has started to convert Fitzalan Court into student accomodation. This is conversion of the existing building with an additional 1 and 2 floors - mind you from the render you will need to look hard to notice the addition!!!

Looks like a lot of properties will be up for sale in Cathays! If all of these accommodations being built are filled then large parts of Cathays will presumably have quite a change of identity. This must be happening Nationwide - releasing tens of thousands of houses - can't see this being a bad thing at all.

I myself am being converted into student accommodation next week, I'm having an extra bit added on top of my existing head.

It does broadly seem like a good thing although I'd be wary of getting student ghettos. I was appalled when looking for a flat around Connaught Road at what had been done to some impressive properties.

The original buildings were pretty nasty PoMo rubbish. A total redevelopment would have been better but there's something quite funky and tongue in cheek about the way the new floors appear to squash the old ones. It might grow on me.

Every city has at least one street like Newport Road - a museum of utilitarian, undistinguished buildings. It doesn't really matter what gets built there. Apart from the Victorian University block, Shand House and the Holland House hotel - the buildings are all rubbish.

I would say there are a few more buildings worthy of note on Newport road, the further east you go, the smaller buildings are quite nice also. Dont forget the excellent refurbishment of 'some' of the Royal infirmary has brought this building back to life externally.

Fair point - I was thinking of the stretch from the City Road lights into town. As you say there are some nice buildings further out including Roath Court and a couple of striking redundant chapels.
