Cardiff sports mega-thread

PostTue Aug 30, 2016 10:39 am

Should there be a thread covering all of Cardiff's main sports team: Cardiff City, Cardiff Blues, Glamorgan CCC and Cardiff Devils, plus the national teams?

I'm sure there's plenty of CCFC/Glamorgan bitching and potential Devils/Blues optimism going on.

Plus it could cover all the other sporting events coming to the city.

Hi Ben - Do you mean like this one you started to cover them all, or individual ones? I think individual ones would be fine - somewhere to moan about cardiff city (haven't got over saturday yet!! )

I meant one single one to cover them all in the hope that for every devastating CCFC moment we get a bright spot from something else.
I was going to start a thread about ice hockey's Challenge Cup final coming to Cardiff but felt it wasn't big enough for its own thread so wondered if a sport thread with potentially lots of regular views would be a good option.

Ok that makes sense then let this thread be it!

I'll kick off (pardon the pun) regarding Cardiff City... Marshall gone, Fabio gone, Le Fondre on bench when we should be putting him in shop window? desperate need for a striker this week!! dwindling crowds... oh god who's idea was this I'm feeling depressed!!!

Please don't let my temporary Bluebirds misery put contributors off on all Cardiff sport, perhaps each post could start with

The Team and then your comment, we could have a great mix of highs and lows here, a veritable cardiff sports roller coaster!! great idea Ben!

The situation at CCFC is depressing but at least they're bad in blue!

Offloading popular players, no one good coming in, Lennie Lawrence involved… what year is it exactly?

I'm not a fan of Trollope: it would appear that spending a summer carrying cones for Chris Coleman doesn't prepare you for the most pressured job in Welsh football after all!
Still seems like he doesn't know the squad very well, as shown by Le Fondre's appearance on the bench and then not even playing him.

Ice hockey's Challenge Cup final coming to Cardiff in 2017: http://www.cardiffdevils.com/news/chall ... ena-wales/

Bit of a coup for the owners of the Devils and a nice side-effect of having a new arena.

THE DEVILS' NEW HOME VENUE, ICE ARENA WALES, HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS THE HOST VENUE FOR THE 2017 ELITE LEAGUE CHALLENGE CUP FINAL, WITH THE GAME SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY MARCH 5TH.

The decision to stage one of the league's marquee events in Cardiff was made at the recent board meeting, with Devils managing director Todd Kelman explaining why the league decided to make the change.

"We proposed to the league some time ago that rather than hosting the game in Sheffield every year, why not allow teams to bid for it." he said.

"I made a pitch to host it at the recent EIHL board meeting and it was voted unanimously to hold this season's Challenge Cup final in Cardiff."

"We have a fantastic new arena here in Cardiff and we will make sure we make the Challenge Cup Final a great event, regardless of which teams make the final."

The Sheffield Arena hosted the event in 2015 and 2016, following the decision to change the Final to a one game, winner takes all show down at a fixed venue.

The face-off time and details of how to book tickets will be confirmed by the Elite League at a later date.

That's great news, just wishing again that they'd made the arena bigger. Sheffield has a capacity of 13,500 and ours is some 10,000 less :| I believe there's room for a slight expansion but nowhere near what is required for event such as the Challenge Cup final. Still it remains great news for Cardiff and the new arena.

I've not actually been in IAW but I'm hoping that it's a venue that can be filled for almost every game and won't look too empty when crowds dip.
The opposite of CCS right now. And daytime matches at Swalec Stadium.

Great news for Cardiff!

Anthony Joshua could defend his world heavyweight title in Cardiff later this year, reveals promoter Eddie Hearn

BF world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua's next defence could take place in Cardiff later this year.

The Principality Stadium has been earmarked as a possible venue for Joshua's next bout as promoter Eddie Hearn teases a huge triple-header in the Welsh capital.

The London 2012 golden boy last defended his world title when he stopped Dominic Breazeale at London's O2 Arena in June and plans are being drawn up for his next big fight.

It had been touted that Joshua's next appearance would be in Manchester, but Hearn has revealed that a busy night of heavyweight boxing could be coming to Wales.

"It could be November 26th in Manchester but we are also looking at the possibility of a big night of heavyweight boxing at the Principality Stadium," Hearn is quoted as saying on MailOnline.

"We are talking maybe about David Price v Joseph Parker, Dillian Whyte v Dereck Chisora and then Anthony Joshua v Kubrat Pulev all bundled into one - it could be a lot of fun.

Something to note for cricket fans: all Glamorgan home games are streamed for FREE with commentary this season.
OK, they may not be much fun to watch, but I'm informed they are the only county providing this full service (another team does it without commentary).

I'm told that it's for the fans stuck in the office or otherwise unable to get to the game. I guess the logic is that if you want a nice day in the sun at a lovely stadium you won't think 'Sod it, I'll save the money by sitting on my sofa staring at my laptop' so it's not affected ticket sales in any way. The club is very happy with the response it's got.
