I've long wanted on see something done on this site. The riverside is badly underutilised. I'm surprised a top hotel hasn't fancied it. Given it's by Central all sorts of other logistics need to be considered - parking spaces, future platform expansion etc I'm just surprised there hasn't been more food and cafe development there already when you consider all the offices on the southside and Callaghan Square. Perhaps they all have great buffets of their own ;)

It could be very good but would need to maximise the river to the, well, max!! The river is of course a natural break but if done well this may prove a fine compliment to Havannah Quay. It will need height & a bit of a wow in the design.

As a resident for the last 15years of 'strangetown' can you please wise me up about what is so bad about the place where I have very happily lived and intend to continue living? House prices in my area don't reflect your apparent pessimism for the area. So the idea of an hotel on the edge of the city centre, close to a railway station over looking Grangetown isn't so crazy in my opinion - but please let me know what I'm missing in my naivety ? :?

don't be so sensitive Paul. i'm just making a statement that top hotels like to have decent vistas. The two top hotels in the city overlook either the Bay or the civic centre. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with Grangetown. I also have no idea what house prices have to do with anything.

I also don't get the fascination with wanting to make use of the Taff riverbank. The Taff is more like a large stream than a river. You certainly aren't going to get a riverside setting that you would either see in the Cotswolds or central London.

Yes granted perhaps I am being a tad sensitive (and surely I have the right to be as I live here) it's because it's not the first time you've had a little dig at Grangetown - I guess I pick up on these side swipes more because I live here. Maybe you don't realise you're doing it? Regardless, I'm not particularly worried about this, but just want to stick up for the place - that's all. :) Anyway I don't think our city centre is big enough to be surrounded by magnificent views in all directions - let's face it, on here we (well many of us) often like buildings to have some height and that's going to mean overlooking houses in immediate suburbs - although the Hilton is a pretty unique exception to this, being so perfectly located and not of any great height. The Macdonald Holland does not have such majestic vistas but it's nicely located nevertheless.

Regarding the Taff - it used to be like a 'large stream' but since the barrage was built, it is no longer tidal and therefore benefits from a more constant depth. I think plenty more could be made of it and fully expect that Rightacres feel the same way, of course we'll find out soonish when we see plans for this new Central Quay development, can't wait to see them.

I don't think I've ever had a little dig at Strangetown Paul. I like the place and in my formative years did a lot of drinking in the Neville and Lyndon (the former now being late of this parish).

OK - Glad to hear that you are not anti 'Strangetown' :) I love being so close to some of the loves of my life, our city centre and the Cardiff City stadium to name but two! I must admit, I wasn't too upset that the Neville is now a 'one stop', but the fact the Neville closed and that the Tramshed is very often doing great business is perhaps a reflection of a more positive direction for the area. Likewise the fact the the Grange is being rejuvenated by the Landsdowne/Potted Pig people also bodes well. As for the Lyndon - only a very short stagger from my house and occasionally benefits from my custom - hic!!

Never mind Grangetown.. I don't see what the problem is in locating a hotel next to a train station. Surely that's an advantage?

 What do you mean.. Never mind Grangetown!! only jokin butt

OK that's enough defending of 'the strange' for today!!

I'm with you Amoore - surely a hotel next to the station is superb, both for business and leisure, to be able to walk to your destination after your train journey and cutting down on the hassle of further travel has to be a bonus. I've still got confidence that the Central Square area will be something Cardiff can be proud of, and it looks like the southside maybe as good or better! therefore if that's the general area a visitor stays then that would tick plenty of boxes.
