It's a good point, but the planning system does work. Much of Cardiff's buildings do get approved - but that's because theyre up to a good standard (compared with poorer countries). If we didn't have a planning department, our cities would be significantly worse. Companies building what they want where they want. It would be an absolute fuckery.

There is more than inference from the fact that almost every application is granted.. I think you draw the wrong ( and rather naive) one.

Fantastic.

Have you considered that the relative quality of buildings here compared to "poorer countries" (as you put it) might be due to relative wealth ?

And just look at those "Absolute fuckery " places before the statutory planning regime came in....Edinburgh, Bath, Oxford, Georgian Victorian and Edwardian London, etc etc.....all significantly worse than those built after.

Yes, of course, its to do with wealth - all being before the 1947 Town and Country Act. Cardiff has never had the wealth of those cities before the subsequent planning bill was passed, and shouldn't be compared with them historically.

I was merely stating 'Absolute fuckery' when it came to the inner city slums of industrial cities of Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds etc.

Cardiff is one of those Industrial cities, and subsequently, many houses of the inner city were, and some still are - terraced, small, back-to-back 4x4m housing. Many of these houses were cleared, but terrible quality and rushed council houses were built in their place - which did nothing but to relocate the socio-economic problems..

That's what I meant about 'Absolute fuckery'. Edit: When I said poorer countries I meant those of the LEDC's or poorer MEDC's of course.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. But insofar as I can discern any possible argument it's that development would be much worse without the planning system. Lets drop the comparisons, they may just be clogging the issue. Instead, let's just take one place...., say, Bath. Before 1947 Bath was a gem, a complete (in appearance ) Georgian / Victorian city. Since 1947 its been raped.
