Well this is potentially very exciting! however they've not released plans have they? more like intentions. Now I've long thought it would be a great idea to have a bit of a town marina at this spot, judging by the name of this project 'Central Quay' it looks like rightacres maybe on the same page as me! Still I'm sure we'll see more on the actual plans in the not too distant. In the meantime I'm satisfied that this is great news! Also the idea that an hotel at the sytner site was perhaps our first clue of this, as it will be perfectly located on the edge of this development. Finally I'm pleased that it looks like we will start to really utilise the relatively new non-tidal Taff.

If it's centred around the old brewery buildings then it's already better than mermaid quay - nope if rightacres are responsible for central square - which hopefully will still end up superb, then I can't see them 'mermaid quaying' just the other side of the tracks!

I'd imagine it will be an area to catch the afternoon and evening workers from Central Square, i was hoping it would mean a resurgence in St Marys street as there are a lot of down and outs on it during the day. Anyway pic of the area, they will need to have better connection between the two areas.

Long time lurker here, but this is something worth dedicating my first post for - if they can match the quality we've seen on Central Square and incorporate the Brains buildings already there this could be amazing. We really need to make more of our riversides in Wales/the UK in general.

For me, the most important aspect of this is the word "Quay" which suggests an emphasis on the river, something that's long overdue in Cardiff. I think that and the intention to keep the historic buildings could make this an amazing development. Especially when you factor in recent plans for Trade St and the long-delayed Dumballs Road development.

Welcome, rconnz!

The importance of this development is massive, and I wasn't expecting this news any time soon. Looking forward to seeing the master plan! This will be a true extension of the city centre, and will make Central Station more... "central". I'm liking the mention of the preservation of the brewery building and the "Covent Garden vibe".

Not to be too downbeat on this but I think we need to be a little cautious.

There are now a lot of proposed developments across the city. Sometimes that is an indication of being at the top of a cycle, and those never get developed - or don't get developed until the next cycle (5-10 years down the line). Just a word of caution.

Second, this development will be challenging in a way. It will definitely not be "Bay". But unless they get the connections right over or under the railway lines, it won't be "City Centre" either. They'll need a really strong riverside walk. And they'll also need to make the route through the station a "through route" as part of any redevelopment (rather than just platform access). Otherwise this will be rather out on a limb.

The right combination or bars and restaurants could make this a better night out than the bay which still feels disconnected and awkward to get to.

If really done well though.
