A floor a day hasn't quite materialised just yet, still on the first one.

They are slow as shit on that site. I walk passed once or twice a day as a minimum and see very little progress. Compare that to the Watkins Jones scheme where they definitely go up a couple of floors a week. They've had plenty of foundation type work on the go towards the road end of the site this week and as of last night you could see that the core would start to rise at the back where the tower is going to be over the next few weeks. Maybe the pace will pick up across the site soon, but it will be a departure from the pace they've worked at so far.

Well a floor a day would put them upto level 4 now, so I'm wondering about that prediction? Having said that, it would appear that everything is now in place, so we may get a clearer picture of the rate of progress and manpower deployed to the site over the next week or so. Regardless of the rate of early progress it's nice to see that construction is underway in a vertical direction!!

It is nice to see, looking forward to watching it go up over the next few months.

The other thing is there is a second smaller crane to go up at some point, presumably for the smaller 8 floor part of it.

I just popped over to site for a look and I'm starting to wonder if that floor a day(ish) rise in the central core maybe will happen? what's that white contraption in the picture below - is this some expandable rapid concrete delivery device that will grow with the tower? Anyone with actual construction knowledge want to help us out here

That is a plinth mounted placing boom of a concrete pump. The pump itself is at ground level, with a fixed pipe network taking the concrete to the boom, which is hydraulically controlled to place the concrete exactly where you want it. That certainly implies speed of construction.

The plinth is normally disconnected and relocated at a higher level as construction rises. The practical limit on placing concrete like this is around 200m but there are ways to increase it further.

Construction Technology 101
Build it and they will come.
Get it wrong and they will fall off.

Looks as if they are going to slipform the core. I know Midwest have that capability and they are also a fan of pre-cast concrete columns. So this building may actually go up quite quickly.

That's what I meant when I said contraption!! ;) "So this implies speed of construction!" OK I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the central core will get to max height before Bridge St. - but I won't put money on it!! - already lost money today on the Bluebirds not winning
Also with "the practical limit on placing concrete like this is around 200m" - 80m will be a walk in the park!! 2 floors a day anyone!!

With two tall towers (ok, by Cardiff standards) underway this should be an interesting couple of months

Got invited on site today :) (Cheers Steve!) So I was able to take the picture below. Also confirmation of the one floor a day (weather permitting) but that's tuesday til friday, so 4 a week. Also the second crane is going up this weekend it'll be about 40metres so considerably shorter than its big brother. It was a great privilege to go and see proceedings close up, better have a word with my mate Stuart at Bridge St next!

I was right, they are slipforming the core.
