What's that boy? Activity at the Ely Mill?

PostWed Jul 30, 2014 8:41 am

I walked past yesterday and there were a number of workers (about 10) clearing debris, removing fencing and doing general work at the Ely bridge end of the old Arjo Wiggins paper mill site.

A recent planning application to install a new access road to the development here was accepted a few months ago - are we about to finally see this site starting?

Good news.

We seem to be at a point now where one or two of these large housing developments are about to start.

Any news on St.Edeyrn ?

Edit : Just seen this

Hopefully it'll be approved today..I'll post it in a new thread actually

Just to add a bit more to my earlier post - this portion of the site has had some additional fencing added and there are earth movers, portakabins and storage containers so safe to say this is definitely starting!

I will try and get a photo tonight

More activity on site as a large number of trees have been cleared around the waters edge and the railway line... Still nothing in terms of houses or even roads built yet though!

It sounds like basic site clearance. It could be a sign that serious work is set to begin this spring, There've been a lot of false starts with this one though.

I hope it comes off - there's an awful lot of pent-up demand for housing in the city's inner west. It's a popular area and it needs affordable housing to keep the social mix that's part of its appeal.

Could be a while before any houses are actually built - the site only has Outline planning permission still.

Construction starts this autumn;

I'm a bit mystified why the private homes won't be completed until 2022!

No mystery, house developers like to release builds in phases because there is so little demand for housing these days.

hang on got that wrong.... I'll try again.

house developers like to release builds in phases because they don't want prices to sag in any one area due to over supply. (i.e. flood  the market!!)

Each phase gets a nice "river front view" until the next phase gets built.

Having grown up near millbank I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Topical point. How prone to flooding would this site be?
