Looks like this is still meant to be happening. as there is an amendment proposed in this weeks planning applications.

18/00922/MJR Non Material Amendment Expected Decision Level: DEL
Received: 23/04/2018 Ward: ADAMSDOWN
Case Officer: Tim Walter
Applicant: . Boardroom Properties Ltd, , ,
Agents: Savills, 2 Kingsway, Cardiff, , , CF10 3FD
Proposal: AMENDMENTS TO 17/01063/MJR - REPLACE ALL STUDIOS WITH CLUSTER FLATS RESULTING IN
A NET INCREASE IN 14 BED SPACES
At: HALLINANS HOUSE, 22 NEWPORT ROAD, ADAMSDOWN, CARDIFF, CF24 0TD

Content of this is interesting. They are replacing all studios with cluster flats. Demand for studios in the existing blocks looks to be fairly limited as well.

So is this the shape of things to come with the remaining developments? Fewer "luxury" studios and more flats offering cheaper and slightly more social student living?

I wonder when the applications to turn some of these developments into "communal living" as in some in London will start to happen?

I'm not so sure that will take off in Cardiff. Housing costs in Cardiff are such that someone with a half decent job can realistically afford a flat or house share with 1 and at most 2 other people. In London thats not the case - some people really need to share with 4, 5, 6 people to find somewhere affordable. In that case you might consider some sort of communal living arrangement (so at least you have some nicer facilities). Although I don't see why anyone would really. They aren't a cheap option, despite being tiny. I guess people who REAALLY hate sharing bathrooms and can't afford somewhere with an en suite??

I hope it's a shape of things to come, it makes more sense. There's surely only so much demand for people to pay out those higher levels of rent.

It does look like it's still happening doesn't it? What with this and that sandwich place on the ground floor closing. We just need confirmation of Howells moving offices to somewhere else now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this project has started:

Looks like another 30-storey building coming to Cardiff.

I'm afraid you are wrong. This is easyhotel next door.

I read that hallihans house and custom house street will only proceed if a student house developer buys the developments rather than the current owner/developers proceeding with them

Ah right. That's a shame. It's a fairly deep hole for low-rise building.

I can't say I'm surprised. I like the proposed building design though so a shame, I wonder if it could be revised to be for private rental instead?
