... appears to be finally happening with Welsh Government money.

The former home of coal firm the Cory Brothers - a rundown five story Grade II-listed structure in Cardiff Bay - is to be redeveloped into apartments and shops with loans of £6m. The Corys' building, on the corner of Bute Place and Bute Street, was built in 1898.

Housing and Regeneration Minister Rebecca Evans the building was "part of Cardiff Bay's historic past".

Most of the cash is being provided by the Development Bank of Wales.

It will be good to see them occupied. Both the buildings are lovely, but a real eyesore at the moment.

Hopefully it will actually happen this time and that might then spur them on to develop the empty plot(s) next door.

And from Mr Goodway.......

Cardiff’s Historic Buildings
The Council will be aware that Capital Ambition commits the Administration to protecting the city’s collection of listed buildings and structures with a focus on ensuring that they are both protected an revitalised, especially those that remain derelict and unused.
The Council has already made significant progress in this area. The former Bute Street station regeneration is now completed with 21 of the 23 business units within the building already let. Councillors will be aware of the decision, last week, to provide support for the completion of the on-going redevelopment of the Coal Exchange via an allocation of loan funding under the Welsh Government Town Centre Loan Scheme. The developer Signature Living has made good progress in a relatively short period of time opening 56 hotel bedrooms and bringing the main exchange hall back into use. The main façade has been fully renovated and a new restaurant has also been opened in recent months. The full scheme will deliver over 170 hotel bedrooms and the Cabinet decision to support this loan will help the developer raise the remaining funds necessary to ‘get the job done’.
The next phase of this initiative centres on James Street where I hope to be in a position to bring forward proposals to regenerate Merchant House and the Cory’s Building and also the site on James Street adjacent to Mount Stuart School that has remained derelict for nearly 30 years. The removal of these remaining eyesores from Cardiff Bay is a major priority and longstanding ambition of the Administration.

Didnt someone get a few million in the past few years to renovate Cory buildings? At one point they were stripping asbestos from it.

I think skyview got a few million from the Welsh investment bank. The asbestos was supposed to be removed in August last year.

I did see a couple of blokes taking office furniture into it a few weeks backs, don't know why. That's the only thing I've seen happen there, I tend to go past a few times a week.

I find it depressing that two fantastic buildings have just been left like that and developers have been given tax payers money and nothing happens.

Some positive news at last!

Plans have been revealed to transform derelict buildings in Cardiff Bay into the home of a top college.

Merchant Place and the adjoining Cory’s Buildings, on the corner of Bute Place and Bute Street, have been empty for more than two decades.

The late 19th century buildings were recently bought by Cardiff Council, in a bid to protect the city’s architectural heritage.

Now the council is considering selling the buildings to Dukes Education, which owns the prestigious Cardiff Sixth Form College.

The independent college, currently on Newport Road, would relocate to the Bay, with both the college and accommodation for students in a refurbished Merchant Place and Cory’s Buildings. Details of the plans were revealed in a recent cabinet report.

I'm pretty bullish about this. Dukes Education, the owners of the college, appear to have deep pockets and are developing it for their own purposes not as a speculative venture.

An influx of students (albeit 6th form ones) could be a very good thing for the bay and it would be great to see those buildings finally put to use.

Agree. I can imagine having a freshly renovated grand historic building will be quite a selling point to the wealthy overseas students. It will be great to have a bit of life back in the corner of the Bay too which is a bit of a dead zone between Mermaid Quay and Roald Dahl Plas at the moment.

Any quality developments in the old part of Butetown are most welcome, the buildings are stunning and they should be the heart of the bay rather than the architecture-free Mermaid Quay.

Some nice restaurants and bars would bring a buzz to the area which can feel quite deserted, especially in the evenings The tatty shops at the lower end of Bute Street would be a good place to start.

Agreed. Hopefully with the old Bute Road station buildings back in use and the college relocating to the James Street corner, the stretch between them should begin to pick up.

Also the ground floor of the now converted old Bank building is earmarked for a restaurant I believe.
