I never realised castles could be so controversial! I'm not sure that the city walls of York and Chester can be considered part of a castle, but they are still splendid things to visit. I always enjoyed the way that the railway cuts straight through the Chester wall - the Victorians could be very unsentimental about historic buildings sometimes, but fortunately they were much kinder to Cardiff.

I never wrote that the city walls were part of a castle, only that York has a well-preserved castle in its centre. For some reason Ash decided to agitate against this fact. You wrote that as far as you knew only Edinburgh and Cardiff have well-preserved city centre castles and I merely pointed out that York, Newcastle, Nottingham and London do too.

I'm wondering whether both photos were taken on the same day as the sunset was exceptional on that day.

Resurrecting this thread to share this image I found of the city centre in 1977 (and sorry for linking instead of uploading but it was impossible to save and then upload the photo without losing too many pixels):

Does anyone know the exact location this was taken and if it's still publicly accessible 43 years later? I'm not too familiar with Pentrebane. A few observations:

Capital Tower (then Pearl House) is the standout building and dominates the view, much as it does now;

For what was then considered a provincial backwater, Cardiff had a respectable collection of mid-rises for a medium-sized British city, by 1970s standards at least;

East Moors is a point of major interest and a reminder than long before becoming a sport and shopping destination, this was an industrial city;

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I much prefer the National Stadium and original incarnation of Stadium House. Brutalism is much more appreciated now than even a decade ago and the Blair-era reclad of SH combined with the gargantuan portions and purely functional architecture of the MS look paradoxically more dated than the older buildings would now look to contemporary eyes.

In no way can i agree that BT Stadium house and former Cardiff arms park looked better, they look as dated as Golgate house and were made of cheap and dirty materials. Its been 20 years since the Millenium stadium and it still looks relatively clean, tidy and exciting and has changed the direction of the city.
