Who would that serve from that location?

Not much other than the waste incinerator, a scrapyard and industrial units at the moment although Bad Wolf studios is nearby. There is a lot of land around there that has development potential though. ABP must have it’s eye on developing the perimeter of Roath Dock. I’m pretty sure the land just south east of queens gate roundabout is already for sale.

The ‘Tremorfa’ station appears to be located at Splott Park so would effectively serve both districts.

This sounds like using the Metro station to encourage development of a largely derelict area. 'Transport led development'

Planning application submitted for new Butetown station and upgraded Cardiff Bay station as part of Metro plans.

https://planningonline.cardiff.gov.uk/o ... APR_139728

Interestingly the application includes a route map which also shows extension of Aberdare line to Hirwaun and Hirwaun Energy Park; and also extension of Coryton line to Velindre Hospital and M4 J33.

Disappointingly the plans for Cardiff Bay only include station signage in English. They did this at Cardiff Queen Street and had to change following complaints. You would have thought they would have learned their lesson by now!!

Interesting read. Will the names Red Line and Blue Line be used for the Metro or is this naming convention and symbology for the purpose of the document only? I wouldn't be surprised if we only get the solid red and blue lines with all the hashed lines getting scrapped and the bus priority in option 5 going ahead instead. The cheapest and easiest solution will get the go ahead resulting in a half-baked scheme that nobody will use.

Well the solid red line already exists and the solid blue parts are already agreed sections of the 'Cardiff CrossRail' metro route. But you're probably right - the 'bus priority' looks to be a preemptive compromise for when they run out of money.

It looks even more strange given that Cardiff Bus have never operated or even trialed a conventional bus route from Splott to the Bay. It would make a lot of sense to reroute the No1 City Circle via the Bay.

I agree - the pointless bus route is just to support the do-as-little-as-possible option. Expansion of 'Red' line to Pierhead Street is a no-brainer - as is the building of the 'Blue' line from Cardiff Central. But dont think that extension to Newport Road will happen. However I think the extension to Alexanda Quay/Cardiff Barrage might be feasible...but maybe as extension of Blue Line rather than disrupting the Red line sevices.

One question I have is the location of the Callaghan Square station - which only serves the Cardiff Central/Blue line. This area needs to be served by Queen Street/Red line services as well. Either relocate this station onto the shared line - or if this is too close to Butetown station, then make a new station on Red Line near John Street - get Rightacres to fund it!!!

I think a better option for improving rail connectivity in eastern Cardiff than the Pierhead Street to Newport Road metro, would be to run a tram alongside the SWML from Newport Road/Rover Way to Windsor Road, then take the disused freight line under Tyndall Street East and then run along Tyndall Street to Callaghan Square connencting to the new Cardiff Central to Cardiff Bay line.

Apart from the Tyndall Street section (which would need some careful engineering to maintain traffic flow during street running) most of this route follows exiting disused trackbed and so would be easy to build. With stations/tram stops at Callaghan Square, Tyndall Street, Windsor Road, Splott Road, Beresford Road and Newport Road/Rover Way it would provide better sevice to Splott, Adamsdown and Tremorfa than the current Crossrail proposal.

To the west the tram could either turn north along St Mary Street - or south west towards Penarth Road. And in the east could continue to Cardiff Parkway (with an extra stop at Rumney) as Crossrail plans.

There is a current bottleneck at the Herbert Street rail bridge which blocks theTyndall Street line but Cardiff Council plan
to replace this as part of Callaghan Square redevelooment, which would allow tram line to go ahead.

Isn't there an issue with the tram-trains running on the mainline? Not sure if it's a vehicle type specific restriction or that they just don't want to mix metro services with regular heavy rail services on the same tracks.

There was a station at Splott Road bridge called 'Roath', but it only existed for or about 20 years closing in 1917. There would be room to put platforms for the Northern pair of tracks here, but I'm not sure if these are the mainline tracks or the relief line. Again though, Im not sure how simple it is to put a station here without impacting mainline operations.

Presumably the proposed station at Newport Road/Rover Way junction with between the SWML and the Docks freight line has space for a revised track layout that can allow mainline through services to pass waiting metro services?
