The main reason why they wanted to have an extra station at the flourish opposite the WMC was money
They would replace the train line along Bute Street with the tram line in one long straight stretch using the developers greenery next to Lloyd George (rat infested area #2)
This would then release the existing train line to be sold off for flats, as its much easier built on brown field rather than green.

They even suggested knocking down the railway bridge at the top of Lloyd George Avenue and having the trams share the traffic lanes?? This would be barking mad as where else are cars going to queue for the car parks every weekend?

Nothing wrong with the rail line down to the Bay, it might even facilitate a regeneration of the bottom of Bute Street by increasing footfall by making people walk the extra 100 metres.

Id like it to happen, brilliant idea. But we need to go like places in Newport Road or Penarth Road or Cowbridge Roads somewhere like that to attract people in them.trains

The tram line that would make sense to me would be Culverhouse - St Mellons, although others like Centre - Grangetown and Centre - Pentwyn would also make sense, but as always it's down to cost and design.

Tram line Culverhouse - St Mellons,

Yes, we could dig up the A48 and put in the tram route, only slight disruption while doing it!
Or even widen the road, unless you have a secrete route.

This was Cardiff Central yesterday on way back home. Cardiff Central was replaced by a giant BUS

Image

For Penarth and Barry, they couldn't even be bothered to put on rail replacement buses.
I know they have to do the work but they appeared to have finished for the day at 5pm
I expected arc lights and huge amounts of activity, but it was dead and dark.

PS Apologies for the poor quality of the photo and the Welsh.

Some stations should be underground.

Remember the tram they had back 80 years ago somewhere

And the cardiff bay terminus or not station should be underground cause there might be more stops or somethings

In an ideal world, an underground line would be ideal, the problem is cost, it would be astronomical and no government of any political persuasion would even contemplate it. From what I've seen of the proposed Metro, it ticks most of the boxes for a fraction of the price.

Just seen a very useful map based on the 2011 census. It shows just how few people UK wide commute on the train. Outside of the south east of England it is minimal. A few in the central belt of Scotland, Merseyside and Cheshire but that's about it. Also a small number in south wales but not Cardiff.

What are the reasons for this? Is it entirely logical - practicality, time, cost or are there other reasons? Does the car still have a degree of kudos in the modern consumer society that public transport will never compete with? Many people are spending a great deal of their lives commuting by car. We have the opportunity in south wales with the electrification to have an efficient public transport system but will enough people want it?

I think if everywhere in the UK had such a wide ranging train network as the one we have in London and the surrounding area then other cities would follow suit.
