Great news, Walesonline reports Celtic Manor to open new hotel on Westgate Street:

Plans to turn two of Cardiff's most historic buildings into a new 175 bedroom luxury hotel can be revealed.

The listed old Post Office and adjoining former County Court buildings on Westgate Street in the centre of the capital will be transformed through a new joint venture between the Welsh Rugby Union, financial services giant Legal & General and property development firm Rightacres.

The Portland stone built and now vacant former Post Office building, which was designed by Sir Henry Tanner and opened in 1897 as part of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee celebrations, has been acquired for the project from a London-based investor.

The smaller County Court building, which was constructed in 1904, is already in WRU ownership.

The new hotel, which will maintain and enhance the building's existing listed facades, is expected to be run by the five star Celtic Manor Resort in its first project outside of Newport.

Well that's great news and pretty much confirmed what we thought would happen with this great building. Is the existing structure big enough to contain 175 5 star rooms? I was assuming that additional construction will be required? Mind you with potential opening just next year then maybe not. I'm looking forward to hearing more on this one but celebrate the very positive future plans for this building.

According to WRU statement:

Building work will restore, preserve and enhance the historic features of both buildings to include 165 bedrooms, fifteen VIP suites, two restaurants, a luxurious rooftop spa with outside Jacuzzi as well as meeting facilities and a ballroom for 400 guests.

The development includes the Post Office and the County Court. Scheduled to open December 2020

Doesn't the Civil & Family Justice Centre (formally County Court) use part of the Post Office building facing Park Street? If yes, I assume that they will have to move to make way for the hotel.

Planning application for this renovation is online - 19/01540/MJR
Interesting points
- is now a 4* hotel
- interesting history fact: the river taff used to run down Westgate Street before Brunel moved the river rather than build railways round it. Quay Street is called so because it led to the quay on the river
- there is a 6 story extension planned next to the county court side (don’t know how to add a pic on here, if anyone can help?)

Disappointed that it's been downgraded to a 4 star. The city needs a 5 star offering.

Were the original plans for a 5 star, or was it always 4 star? Given that hotel star ratings have no officially recognised criteria.

That's pretty brutal. They've not just made no effort to fit in with the local architecture, they've gone out of their way to stick two fingers up to it!
