It's not as brutal as Stumpy House lurking just behind it!

Apparently it will be owned and operated by the people who run Celtic Manor. They will be familiar with the South Wales hotel market and have concluded that a 4* is more commercially viable. Not sure what makes the difference between 4* and 5* - probably some ludicrous fripperies...

The other talk of a 5 star hotel was related to Qatar and possibly located at the soon to be vacated Howells building?

I like the modern extension - the black bit- behind the older building frontage, which blends well with the stadium behind.

The only positive thing that can be said for the new corner extension is that it looks better than the Westgate Street carpark.

Id the "soon to be vacated" a prediction, or do you know something?

oops! apologies I'm not up to speed on this one (I hope I haven't upset any employees!) I thought it was for the chop but now see that it is to survive the cull! that's good news for me and old news for others who are more up to date!

There is still talk of consolidating the department store on the Trinity Street side of the building and dividing the site in two by reopening Wharton Court - the square in front of the former Bethany chapel. I think the idea was that the magnificent Art Deco building on the St. Mary Street side could become a hotel.

I don't really see the problem with that design. The area is already a varied mix of architecture (as demonstrated in the images).

I don't mind it. It's not going to win any architecture prizes. Always going to be difficult job since it's neighbouring facades are so grand. I was hoping for some New Classical architecture to match the existing stuff but that was never going to happen. Reminded me of a modern building in Boston that was built to blend into its classical surroundings back in 2011. Shows what you can do to a plain white box to get it to blend into its surroundings a little more. Hoped something like this could have been achievable.

Was also just curious what the black brick rear section would have looked like in the same material as the front. Couldn't picture it so whipped out good old Microsoft Paint just to see. Can't say I like it or dislike it any more in white.
