I've always called them reens or 'rinniau' in Welsh. I think it's an English or Norman word originally though since it's used on the English side as well.

In my part of Somerset, I seem to remember then being called Rhynes, the prenounceation being the same.

Growing up in Rumney Cardiff, when we were kids we used to play in and around the reens.
Where Greenway Park is all the way over to the sea wall.

Made rope swings and jumping across them... lots of falling in...great times
