Bath? Cambridge? London? Newcastle? Oxford? All of these cities have continually embraced the river. Bristol has some great new developments around the River Avon and the New Cut. Look at the Finzels Reach development:

More locally, Newport makes much more of the River Usk and I think it has the edge over Cardiff in this respect.

That said, Cardiff use have a lot prominant developments on the river and canal fronts and I think this is where redevelopments in the last few decades have really failed. Many of the old canals have been covered over or filled in.

From your list of cities i would say they only use very small stretches of their rivers and mostly as a place at the back of the city and not the heart(with the exception of London). Newport is really taking advantage of the river despite it looking awful for most of the day, that city definitely would benefit from a small barrage/lock gates.

RandomComment is right for the most part. TBF Oxford and Cambridge were never that industrial along their waterways, and flooding in the case of Oxford meant the city didn't really embrace the river the way Cambridge does.

With the the exception of the area around Pultney Bridge, Bath largely turns it's back on The Avon, as it much of it used be industrial riverside, and is still littered with a lot of brownfield sites and dereliction.

Bristol's waterways are very much at the heart of the city, and more than a small stretch. Not sure if you can really compare it fairly with Cardiff though as it is a bit different, in the sense that the port and town were all muddled and developed together in a way that Cardiff generally didn't, and it's worth noting that regeneration of the waterfront in Bristol initially started in the 1970s.

Newcastle is a bit of a let down imo.

JCBs have been doing a lot of digging behind the new hoarding on the Fusion Point 3 site this week. Meanwhile, demolition of the old food processing site on the opposite side of Dumballs Road to FP3 has commenced. Demolition of the two units north of the laundry is finished and hoarding almost complete. Dumballs Road is beginning to look rather empty again.

Fusion Point 3 is now officially One Canal Parade, and is under construction:

The design looks an improvement over the previous one, and the name hints there might possibly be 2 and 3 Canal Parade in future.

Well that's a big improvement on fusion point! pleasant surprise, and it's underway - better get down there for some photos soon.

I'm sure there's plenty going on behind the scenes for Dumballs Road - (residential) with recent demolitions and 2 reasonable size hoarded plots - I wonder when we'll hear more on development of this significant area?

Well at least that's now two decent buildings down there. I think Lyndon's point about there possibly being other buildings in the future might be true. Look at how small the footprint is and how much land there is behind it, so maybe more offices further down Canal Parade, particularly seeing as the colour scheme does fit with the college. Rightacres built the college as well didn't they?
