There is an application for the empty plot in Caroline Street. This has been empty for at least 30 years since a mysterious explosion and all previous applications have come to nothing.

This one is slightly different in that the owners of Wyndham Arcade appear to have bought the plot and are proposing to turn it into a courtyard whilst reconfiguring a couple of the units so that access can be gained from the arcade to the courtyard and vice versa.

If done well this could be really good with planting, decent lighting and seating, some street art on the walls of the adjacent buildings etc. It will also compliment the Brewery Quarter which has its Caroline Street access almost directly opposite. Application is at the link

I seem to remember an attempt to do something similar a decade or so ago. I think on that occasion it was also hoped to open the southern part of Tabernacle Lane to the public to provide access from the Morgan and Royal Arcades to the Brewery quarter.

The council plan to buy Cory's building and Merchant Place in Butetown.

Good plan, great to see CC being pro-active in developments like this.

They're beautiful buildings in a prime location and they and the area will massively benefit from them being smartened up and put into use.

Well done the council for once. Goodway can be insufferable but he does have a track record of getting things done.

Two new housing proposals for Sanatorium Rd. In conjunction with the nearly completed Mill development, this is going to become quite a built-up residential area and represents a massive change of use in an area which was primarily brownfield/ light industrial only 10 years ago.

We need more brownfield developments like this. Infilling under-utilised areas instead of more greenfield commuter sprawl.

The obvious advantages of building on brownfield sites, is that local infrastructures don't have to be built from scratch. In many cases, public transport just needs to be modified, shops, restaurants, pubs and other such facilities will be close by and will benefit from extra income.

Also down that neck of the woods, the new Fitzalan High School has been approved today:

Which will no doubt see a sizeable housing development on the old Fitzalan site
