The subways are dark, narrow, often smelly, collect water in bad weather, feel unsafe, prone to graffiti, no good for cyclists, and a real nuisance for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.

But apart from that, they're fine....

Subways can be useful where people need to cross busy high-speed roads, provided they can be designed with a clear line of sight through them and gently sloping approaches. But in a city centre with low speeds and high volumes of pedestrians, they are undesirable.
