Simon__200 wrote:Any idea how the policy on Welsh street names has evolved, with certain parts of the city using Welsh language addresses? It doesn't seem related to era; loads of relatively old locations in Whitchurch have Welsh language addresses. I get that Whitchurch was once a village in itself, but it's still pretty much a stonethrow away.

It's likely ebbed and flowed, with a lot of Welsh name on the oldest streets (with some having been changed to a new English name at some pint e.g. Queen's Street, City Road), then a lot of English names during the times of coal and now more Welsh names again.

There's some great curiosities though, such as around Mackintosh Place in Roath. Look at the map below and remember that Mackintosh Place was named after Alfred Donald Mackintosh, originally of Moy, Inverness who's historical family home was called Daviot (not far from Braeval) and who married Harriet Diana Arabella Richards, giving birth to a son called Angus.

There's also Excelsior Road in Cardiff and There and Back Again Lane in Bristol, pop culture references.

So much over use of the word 'quarter' in the city as well.

It looks alright though

There can only be four quarters, surely we're in a mathematical impossibility in Cardiff now?
