Means maybe one (possibly more) of Cardiff, Swansea and Parc in Bridgend may close...

I hope not, but if they do close, it'll be interesting to see what they do with them. Knock them down or convert them into something else.

They'll close Swansea, it's older and smaller.

As an obvious piece of prime real estate, Cardiff Prison sticks out like a sore thumb and it was only a matter of time until it is closed.

Personally I would love to see a sympathetic mixed use redevelopment of the site, removing the latter buildings and keeping the old Victorian ones, something akin to the brilliant job 'Urban Splash' did in Plymouth's Royal William Yard.

Well the Cardiff Central MP thinks Cardiff Prison is likely to close -

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales ... t-12781975

It appears that Savils have been appointed to carry out a valuation. Rather than complaining about prison facilities being moved out of Cardiff the MP is concerned that the taxpayer doesn't lose out on any sale. A city centre prison is an anachronism these days although it has to be said that there isn't that much pressure for space in Cardiff. There are a number of empty sites within a 2 minute walk of the prison that have remained undeveloped for years. Would there be that many developers lined up to purchase the site anyway?

Nothing will happen anytime soon - I'd be surprised if the proposed Port Talbot prison gets above ground in the next 5 years. If it does happen then like Neil I think keeping the older Victorian bits and then redeveloping the rest would be the best option. It would be nice to get a developer in with some vision.

There is an application in for the demolition and redevelopment of 9 Womamby Street -

http://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online-a ... APR_119182

This is the derelict building next to Clwb and overlooking the courtyard at the back of Revolution. The proposed building looks good - an industrial sort of design rising to 8 stories that will fit in with the rest of the street.

The ground floor and basement are earmarked for A3. However the top 6 floors will be 2 bedroom flats. I worry about this. There was a report in Walesonline yesterday that Fuel had been served with a Noise Abatement Notice from the Council due to a complaint from one nearby flat dweller. I'm sure that the flats will have good sound proofing and I'm sure they will appeal to younger people who want to be amongst it. But they will still need to sleep. A few complaints and all of a sudden the 'scene' that has built up in Womamby St is jeopardised. Clwb, Revs etc are open until 4am and beyond on the weekend - I'm not sure how that will be conduicive to residential in the area.

Whilst it's great to see these derelict buildings coming back into use it seems crazy that these might end up being a further nail in the coffin of the venues on Womanby Street.

I suppose this is what you meant by "plus ca change"...

If the council let this happen then it just means they have no worry about local elections at all. They know they'll be in power indefinitely. We need to protect what little musical culture we have left. Womanby Street is far enough away from anything to be a fully protected cultural zone.

Womanby Street is about the only street of any sort of character in Cardiff so of course the council will their utmost to turn it into anytown.

we saw this with the point and engine rooms down the docks. if you build apartments next to a music venue then the new residents really should not have grounds for complaint vis a vis noise. what should you expect when you move to next to a music venue?

what chance to residents of Taff mead embankment have of shutting the Millennium Stadium given the crap that emanates from it half a dozen times a year. none of course.

I'd be surprised if they close just one prison to build a new super prison.
