According to this article, dated July 2012, approximately 20% of Cardiff's population were students:

At that time, Cardiff Uni and Cardiff Met were reported to have a combined student population of 42,000.

Considering that this student population is set to increase at a time when Cardiff is suffering from a shortage of housing, it's likely that we're to see such developments being proposed and supported.

Zach, other cities already have student towers. Cardiff is just catching up. It's not like we already have many. The only one of significant size is Ty Pont Haern. Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester all have considerably tall student towers. The whole "student accommodation is taking over Cardiff" argument is greatly exaggerated. Most of the developments under construction in the city centre are actually offices. It just so happens that towers don't have the same benefits for office space as for student accommodation or residential. We won't start seeing office towers in Cardiff until we are really running out of space.

Article mentions that the lease has been sold - any ideas what might take the space? Will 'Yr Hen Lyfrgell' expand its offering and take over that space?

That's such a shame, it was one of the nicest bars in town, beautiful interior, but never seemed to be very busy. The rent on that unit was upwards of £200k IIRC.

there is a glut of student developments in and around the city centre:

existing: Ty Pont Haearn, student castle,

under construction: Howard Gardens, Bridge Street, City Road, St Andrews Lane, Fitzalan Road, Capital Quarter

Proposed: Hope Street, Fitzalan Place

there are probably more

There's a fair few more existing than that, Windsor place, maindy, by the jail, north road, Newport road, next to tramshed

I was thinking mainly city centre, but yes you are correct, there are more

I was mainly talking about student towers, not the odd block of flats. Even then, we still have no more than any other student city. Even Swansea has student accommodation popping up everywhere. These trends aren't somehow exclusive to Cardiff.

The problem with that building is that it isn't on eye level. It can be quite uninviting and nobody knows what's going on inside. It's been struggling to attract visitors for as long as I can remember.

Perhaps Cardiff Council can see sense and turn it back into a Library and turn the current library into a Harvey Nichs?

I don't disagree. Students appear to be more discerning these days with regards to their accommodation than when I was at college. gone are the days of scumbag college
