Cardiff: officially best city in which to live

Much-loved Cardiff has been named as the best city to live in when it comes to quality of life.

It beat the likes of London, Manchester and Liverpool in a survey of the UK’s 12 biggest cities.

Birmingham was voted as the worst place to live.

The poll found that people in the Welsh capital were happier there thanks to low living costs and unemployment as well as above average incomes.

It revealed that families in Cardiff could get by on £359 a week to cover rent, bills, food and drink while people in Bristol needed £430.

That made it the most expensive place outside the capital, yet Londoners were fairly satisfied with their lives.

Scousers were even happier, but their lack of cash for treats and a rising jobless rate pushed Liverpool down the Quality of Life Index, compiled by MoneySuperMarket.com.

Its consumer finance expert Dan Plant said the economy was improving with salaries, disposable income and house prices rising as unemployment was falling.

But he added: “The story differs city by city. While some measure up well, others aren’t feeling the benefit.

"Liverpool was the only city in which unemployment increased, in Sheffield average salaries fell, and in Birmingham the cost of renting went up by 26%.”

It was the cost of living that drew me to Cardiff, and it's because it's so damn nice that 10 years on I'm still here :)
