Central Library

Councillor Cook suggests the new central library could be let to retailers, and the library move to the "old" central library.

Don't think this idea deserves much thought. First, it would be a retrograde step, given the existing use of the old library, and its layout not being particularly conducive for a modern flagship library. Second, the new central library space just won't be that attractive to retailers. There is only a small entrance area, and perhaps 3 upper floors. That is not what modern retailers want. Look at the challenge in letting the former JJB sports and TK Maxx stores on Queen Street. Could probably get restaurant space to fill part of it.. but its quite a sizeable building, and it would be a struggle to fill it all. So it would sit half empty.

They probably could use the space better though. I thought it seemed very 'low rise' when in there - cases were all very low, so it seemed a very inefficient use of space. Perhaps by installing higher book cases, space could be freed up for some commercial use. A coffee shop or restaurant built into the library. Perhaps on the top floor so it offers some nice views down the Hayes?
