The Calvin Klein unit is going to be a "Mac" make-up store. It seems they were able to assign their lease to a new occupier, so that's good news. The plans suggest it will look quite nice.

But another move in the "feminising" of St Davids. When it first opened there were quite a few branded stores largely aimed at men - Lambretta, Fenchurch, Quicksilver, Henleys. All of these quickly fell by the wayside.

In other retail news looks like Starbucks are opening another coffee shop in the city centre - this time in the Next store.

I'll be honest, I sort of hope that one day the Capitol Centre will be demolished. Now that the city has both St Davids 1 & 2, the shopping centre has become almost completely redundant, the fact that it's on the opposite end of Queen Street, and St Davids 1 & 2 is one giant interconnected complex means I've never had any reason to go in there.

The thing I hate most about it though is the architecture, even after the internal rebuild in 2001, the entire thing still looks ghastly- an absolute failure of Post Modernist architecture, that looked tacky and out of date a just few years after it was built.

I would love to see the whole complex demolished & rebuilt, as a mixed use, pedestrianised development, maybe with a little park/square to replace the one that was built over to make way for the new Admiral HQ, if it was next to the station then it could give the area a bit of breathing space, rather then the station feeling like it's being squished between a load of buildings as it is now.

(maybe while they're at it, they could reopen the Dock Feeder canal that's currently running under Churchill Way, seeing as that road doesn't really have much of a point being a Dual Carriageway after Queen Street was pedestrianised.)

Amen to all that.

The Capitol is a shocker - especially bearing in mind the fine buildings that were demolished to make way for it.

This could be Cradiff's answer to Manchester's Canal Street.
Hangon!
Gay bars, drag acts, drunks, bus stop to the eastern fringes of Cardiff,
Yes, lets do a RA on having the canal unearthed

On the Capitol Ctentre, I agree its pointless, but they should turn it in to a specialist arcade, maybe they could just have shops that sell clothes and shoes

At the risk of going off topic the second photo shows what was known as 'Calders corner' after the department store located there. Calders moved to a site opposite the Castle when the Capitol was built before eventualy closing earlier this year.

It's sad to see a long-established independent store go under but I guess the demand for shooting sticks and trilby hats just wasn't there any more!

Although if the Capitol was demolished, the only gay nightclub in Cardiff would come down with it! :)

I don't think Capitol had a good enough strategy against St Davids. They placed such an emphasis on fashion which was obviously going to take a knock when St Davids 2 opened. In my opinion they should have turned it into a destination for technology retail such as Apple, Currys, Phones 4 U, Samsung etc. Or an entertainments centre along the lines of Atlantic Wharf.

The gym is a good move and looks like it has substantially increased footfall, as has the Tesco. The cinema reopening will only add to this I think.
