Welcome back Bank of Wales

PostWed Dec 17, 2014 1:02 pm

Lloyds Banking Group has applied to trademark a logo for the name Bank of Wales/Banc Cymru.

This has been seen as a move that could revive the 42-year-old brand which ceased trading about 10 years ago.

Kent Matthews, a professor of banking and finance from Cardiff University, said he thinks the move could make money for Lloyds.

A Lloyds spokeswoman said: "We believe the Bank of Wales brand could appeal to our chosen target market."

The Bank of Wales used to primarily offer loans to small businesses.

Other than being coloured red and called Bank of Wales does not seem to have a lot to do with Wales.
Bank of Wales is a trading name of Bank of Scotland plc. Registered office: The Mound, Edinburgh EH1 1YZ. Registered in Scotland No.SC327000

What's the registered address anything to do with how much it has to do with Wales ?

Um... nothing? The Bank of Scotland is owned by Lloyds these days any way.

I'm intrigued by what Lloyds may be up to here. It could be just a plan to use the brand as marketing tool but it might possibly signal something more substancial.

There seems to be a consensus developing that Finance Wales needs to be replaced by some sort of arms length investment bank. I wonder if Lloyds are positioning themselves to run it?

The welcome back Bank Of Wales is akin to finding you "grand fathers hammer" after 50 years!!
It just a cynical brand, bit like TSB reborn.
I'm surprised there is not Daffodils and Rugby on the branding too.

Can you provide any evidance for this? (joke)

Maybe, like the Cardiff Airport it should be left to the private sector.
