A few interesting applications in recently -

An application for 14 affordable units at the top end of Bute Street next to St Marys Church (old PDSA building) - the twist being that they are in converted shipping containers

https://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online- ... APR_122165

Also an application for a 5 storey building to replace Longcross House. This is a redundant NHS building which is next to CRI and opposite what was West Wing and is due to be student accommodation. The twist here is that the proposed building is NOT for student resi and is actually being built as affordable housing for 'normal' people.

And of course the obligatory student resi application for City Road -

Seems a shame to bulldoze Shaam Nights on City Road when you have the derelict buildings opposite which were the decorating supplies and double glazing showroom. It did get planning back in 2008 https://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online- ... CAPR_79231 but financial crash probably put paid to that one!

The shipping container proposal for the top end of Bute Street is interesting.

The south side of Callaghan Square and surrounding environs are a complete mess and have been for as long as I can remember. As an area, it's getting closer to the action, with the city centre slowly expanding southwards, but a game changing development (like an arena, a headquarters building or a large speculative office scheme) is needed to get things going.

To make this an attractive area, a major reconfiguration or the entire road system around Callagham Square, Bute Street and Lloyd George Avenue is required - making Callaghan Square into a genuine urban square (instead of a traffic island), getting rid of the roundabout, removing the railway embankment and rail bridge and re-configuring Lloyd George Avenue, so that it feels like a street (with development on both sides) instead of a duel carriageway. I understand that Cardiff Council has been seriously considering many of these changes for years. Hopefully, the metro (and a move to an on-street light railway between the Bay and town) will be the catylist for much of this to happen, over the next 5 years or so.

In the meantime, these shipping container homes could add a bit of interest and give the northern end of Bute Street a more contemporary feel. I wonder how permanent the development would be though and whether the site could eventually be combined with adjacent land (including the Salavation Army Building), for higher density commercial development, once there is some momentum on the southern side of Callaghan Square?

There is an application in for the demolition of 40-44 Queen Street and development of 4 storey building to be occupied solely by Metro Bank.

The buildings to be demolished are the ones between Boots and Frederick Street. They are not particularly attractive and have had a reasonably long history of being occupied by pop ups, mobile phone shops etc. However the proposed replacement building must surely be a joke. Either I am missing something or perhaps I inadvertently woke up this morning in 1971. Here is a link to the Planning Statement doc which has two renders of the proposed 'building' -

https://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online- ... 985296.pdf

Is it me or is this proposal, in terms of aesthetics, possibly the worst to be put forward in a generation?

It's really hard to tell form those renders. And I don't totally dislike it, check out their other stores, it's not far off.

Plus that store only attracts crappy pop-ups which in my opinion only bring down Queen Street.
